Anne Hegerty gives The Chase contestant first ever standing ovation

Anne Hegerty gave comedian Omid Djalili a standing ovation in a rare show of admiration as he narrowly missed out on a huge jackpot on the The Chase.

The Chaser, nicknamed The Governess, just about beat Omid as he opted for the higher offer, a whopping £128,000.

It was a tense round as Omid, 55, came nail-bitingly close to winning the huge amount for his charity, and closely missed out.

Getting up out of her seat – or throne, as it sometimes appears – Anne, 62, admitted she was about to do something she’s never done before, and gave him a standing ovation.

She also described his round as ‘awesome’, and it’s definitely high praise coming from her.

Fans were heartbroken for Omid, with one writing: ‘Aw so gutted for Omid then! Really wanted him to get through.’

‘Ahh, that’s nice of you Anne and you are quite correct, that was awesome!!’another added.

One more pointed out: ‘Anne stood up for Omid. He really is an icon.’

And they weren’t the only ones, as Omid admitted he was shouting at his TV as he watched the show back.

Responding to a viewer who said they’ve ‘never been so gutted by a quiz show’, he added: ‘Me too. I was shouting at myself from the off “sepulchre – GLOOMY you idiot, not pretty!” Gutted.

‘And now my charity have texted asking me not to try and raise money for them any more – but added “and @BearGrylls was not with you this time. So you’ve only yourself to blame”’.

Oh Omid!

He’s not the only star to have narrowly missed out on a massive jackpot, with Joel Dommett recently losing out on £150,000.

Unfortunately, the 35-year-old ultimately failed to beat Jenny, after he only managed to rack up 11 tiles in the final round.

The Chase Celebrity Special continues next Saturday at 7pm on ITV.
