Avengers Endgame end credits: Directors explain shock decision to end Avengers 4 like THIS

It’s all over. Eleven years and twenty-two epic movies across three Marvel phases. The final Avengers movie clocks in at three hours and fans were anxious about whether there would be any extra scenes after the credits started rolling. The biggest shock was the revelation a major Marvel MCU tradition had been broken. But why – and is it worth fans staying in their seats?

There is definitively no end credits scene, but there is a still a stunning series of artworks and illustrations of the major characters.

This is followed by an ominous clanging noise as the screen finally fades to black. Initial theories suggested it was a tolling of bells for the fallen heroes but the filmmakers have now confirmed it is actually the sound of Tony Stark hammering his Iron Man armour in his first film.

Asked about why they decided to end the movie this way, the Russos talked about the huge sense of “closure” on Avengers 4 and why making this film was so different from any other in the MCU.

AVENGERS ENDGAME FAN FURY OVER CAPTAIN AMERICA ENDING BUT DIRECTORS FINALLY EXPLAIN IT IS NOT WHAT IT SEEMS

The directors appeared at a special industry and fan Q&A this week and talked about the endings of their own journey and the story on screen.

Anthony Russo said (via CinemaBlend): “The reason why there’s no end credits is because our goal on this movie was simply to bring to a conclusion the 22 movies now that comprise the MCU for these 10 years of storytelling.

“I think one of the great creative upsides for Joe and I, as story-tellers on this movie, was that this is the first MCU movie we got to tell where we weren’t thinking about the future. We were simply thinking about the past, the journey that we’ve all been on together since that first Iron Man movie. And how do we bring the most epic sense of closure to that the journey that we can possibly do? So that was our goal, and that was really why we had no tag (end credit scene).”

It was also the first time the directors did not need to be planning for what came next.

Russo added: “That opened up a lot of creative opportunities for Joe and I, in the process of making the movie. And I think part of the fact that there’s no tag is testament to the fact that you were not thinking forward at all.”
