BBC Breakfast viewers tuned in for the Thursday episode of the breakfast news programme, and were greeted with hosts Ben Thompson and Katherine Downes.

They were stepping in for usual presenters Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt, who are taking a well-deserved break for the Christmas period and normally present from Thursdays to the weekend.

Ben revealed he would be appearing on the show the night before, writing on Twitter with a scenic field snap: "Feeling v lucky to get a lovely Christmas break with family this year (food, wine and a lot of this.

"Back on @BBCBreakfast duty tomorrow with @KDownesBBC. See you there, 6-9."

Fans took to the post to share their joy at their appearance, with one writing: "Morning Ben, glad you had a good Christmas and ready for another year. Nice to see you back today. Happy New Year."

Another added: "Gorgeous! Glad you had a lovely Christmas Ben."

The show has been going through a number of host switch-ups this week, with Sally Nugent failing on the show on Monday morning and later being replaced by stand-in hosts to keep Dan Walker company.

She was replaced by Luxmy Nopal on Tuesday and Katherine on Wednesday, who has stayed on to cover Naga during the festive week.

On Monday, Dan presented the show by himself, telling fans by himself that he was on his own as he shared a solo snap of himself on the famous red sofa on the set.

He wrote: ""I’m a lonesome cowboy on the @BBCBreakfast sofa and am working my way through some mince pies and miniature heroes.

"Join in if you fancy it."
