'Below Deck Med': Hannah Ferrier Says 'Below Deck' Is 'Very Strict With the 4th Wall'
The Real Housewives of New York City and Vanderpump Rules recently showed instances of breaking the fourth wall. While viewers relished the moments where the cast and crew connected, don’t plan to see that happen often on the Below Deck franchise.
Chief stew Hannah Ferrer recently discussed how the franchise is extremely strict about maintaining the line between cast and cameras. Adding that the cast is not allowed to even speak to the crew when they are filming. While breaking the fourth wall was done in the heat of the moment on RHONY and Vanderpump Rules, new show, Family Karma actually made breaking the fourth wall part of the series.
Viewers witnessed the cast chatting with the crew during filming. Family Karma showrunner Ian Gelfand shared that it was time to include the crew in a series. “How are people pretending there are no cameras in their face?” he asked during an interview with Kate Casey on her Reality Life with Kate Casey podcast. “I had to tell all the moms on Family Karma, they wanted to cook for the crew. They would want to cook a whole spread for everybody every time you were there.”
Pretending cameras aren’t on board is tough
Ferrier told In Touch Weekly that tight spaces and strict rules make for a challenging filming day. “It definitely makes it more difficult in terms of space,” she said.
“If you think about other Bravo shows, they film in a massive mansion or big restaurants or on the beach,” she continued. “And we’re in these tiny confined spaces. And they have very big equipment. So it makes it difficult like that.”

“On Below Deck, they’re very, very, very strict with the fourth wall. So even for myself, I’ve filmed five seasons of it, the camera crew, audio and everything like that, they won’t interact,” she dished. “They won’t say hello to me. They won’t.”
Despite not being a fan of the strict rules, Ferrier says she understands why they are needed. She’s since grown to “understand it and respect it because they need to tell the genuine story of what happens when you put a crew together and overwork them on yachts.”
But ‘Below Deck Med’ did break the fourth wall
Despite the strict rules, chef Adam Glick broke the fourth wall during season 2. Glick and deckhand Malia White embarked upon a secret romantic relationship prior to joining the series. They met shortly before filming began but decided to keep their relationship a secret from the cast and crew.
When White started having feelings for another crew member, Glick became frustrated and angry. He momentarily turned to a camera and hinted that the couple actually knew each other prior to joining the show. Later in separate confessionals, White and Glick admitted to knowing each other beforehand.

This moment inspired showrunner Nadine Rajabi to add more cameras to the boat because the romance took her by surprise.“They came on the boat, and they pretended to just meet for the first time. So we had no idea,” she said during BravoCon. “All of a sudden, I hear Adam say, ‘What about Santorini? What about all this stuff?’ And I’m like, ‘Wait a minute, a person who just met another human being like a week-and-a-half ago would not be talking about these elaborate trips unless he wants to wear her skin to his birthday party. He’s not that crazy.’ I’m like, ‘They know each other.’”
