Britain’s Got Talent winner Jai McDowell in tears over apology from Simon Cowell

Simon Cowell is confronted with Britain’s Got Talent winner Jai McDowell during BGT: The Champions tonight after dismissing the singer over his victory back in 2011.

Jai beat child star Ronan Parke to take gold eight years ago and returns to The Champions with a new look, leaving David Walliams and Amanda Holden hot under the collar.

But more importantly, the 33-year-old gives the performance of his life with Lady Gaga’s I’ll Never Love Again from A Star Is Born. His goal: to prove Simon wrong. And he does just that.

‘When I got the record deal it was a dream come true and to have it all taken away was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to deal with,’ admitted Jai. ‘That’s why I’m back on BGT: The Champions – to show Simon I am a worthy winner and deserve a second chance.’

Amanda was quick to defend Jai, admitting he wasn’t ‘properly celebrated as a winner of this show’.

‘Yes, you look amazing but you’re much more confident, your voice seemed much more powerful; I was able to relax and just enjoy what you did tonight,’ she continued. ‘And my god you did an amazing job with that song; it was really nice to see you.’

But it was all eyes on Simon after he dropped Jai from his label Syco not long after the confetti cannon blew down on the singer for winning the biggest variety act competition in the world.

‘So, 2011. I remember my issue at the time was I was struggling to find out where you fit into the market,’ the music mogul began.

‘The fact that I never gave you support during or after the show and you have the guts to come back and prove a point to me: you’ve grown in stature and in confidence and that was an amazing performance.

‘I owe you an apology for not giving you the support you needed at the time but I also respect the fact you’ve come back and made me look like an idiot and you look fantastic. I could not be more thrilled so here’s the standing ovation I should have given you.’

However, Jai has a tough night ahead as fellow winner Lost Voice Guy returns funnier than ever before, while Simon hails Deadly Games the ‘best Got Talent act across the world ever’.

Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions continues tonight at 8.30pm on ITV.
