Coronation Street spoilers: Gemma Winter makes tragic discovery after shock Aled diagnosis

Gemma (played by Dolly-Rose Campbell) has been at her wit’s end since she gave birth to the first-ever set of quadruplets to arrive on Coronation Street last year. With their children crying at all hours of the day, the mother-of-four and Chesney (Sam Aston) have been trying to find a happy medium. In upcoming scenes on the ITV soap however, they will learn their son Aled is deaf, which leads the beloved character to make a tragic discovery.

The drama will begin next week when the parents of quads take their son to the doctor as they don’t understand why he’s not sleeping.

Unfortunately, the medical professional has to reschedule the appointment, but it means the couple can attend a photoshoot for Fresco after two schedules initially clashed.

Aled becomes more distressed however, which makes his mother upset and her heartbreak doesn’t stop there when she finally gets the diagnosis.

With her son having had profound permanent hearing loss since he was born back in November, Gemma suddenly makes a realisation, leaving her reeling.

As the Fresco PR manager continues to hound her to attend the photoshoot with the quads, the mother-of-four is trying to get her head around her son has never heard her say she loves him.

Rocked by her discovery, Gemma blames herself for not picking up on her son’s condition earlier, but Chesney is on hand to comfort her in her hour of need.

The father-of-five promises to stand by his fiancé’s side and tells her they will tackle the challenges they’re about to face together.

However, their first bump in the road comes earlier than they might have thought as their marketing deal with the food retailer comes into question.

Viewers have watched for months as the parents have struggled to agree with some of the decisions the PR has made to boost her company’s profits.

Some of the things have included the pair being replaced by stand-in models to hold their children in promotional material and their own appearance being altered to make them look better on one of the shop’s latest advertisements.

On the day of Aled’s diagnosis, they are set to attend a photoshoot, but the pair feel the immense pressure being put on their shoulders.

Having had enough, Chesney addresses the PR manager in front of her team and a crowd of guests.

Slamming the campaign as a sham as it doesn’t reflect the reality of raising quads, the father-of-five is dealt a cruel blow as their contract with the retailer is terminated on the spot.

With Gemma currently out of work and no other source of income, Chesney is forced to turn his former boss Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) for help.

Having been sacked by the entrepreneur for working with a rival brand, the kebab shop owner has the power in his hands to offer the beloved character his job back.

Viewers will have to wait and see if the businessman goes with his heart and re-employes the father, or turns him away.

Gemma and Chesney will make the best of their situation no matter the outcome and speaking about the type of mother her character will be, soap star Dolly-Rose said: “I think she is going to be like any mum, trying the best that she can.

“She will definitely be overwhelmed about the situation and the reality of looking after them and the desire to protect them.

“Part of her wants for her children what she didn’t have and she wants to learn from her mum’s mistakes and her upbringing but she has a lot more to deal with.”

With the quads growing up in the coming years, the parents are bound to face more challenges as they go through life with their children.

Coronation Street continues tonight at 7:30pm on ITVv.
