Liz (played by Beverley Callard) has been a pinnacle of the Coronation Street community for over 30 years, manning the Rovers Return on several occasions and getting herself involved with numerous romances. It was announced last year actress Beverley, 63, had quit the ITV soap, which left many fans wondering just how this iconic character will be making her departure from Weatherfield after being at the centre of such high profile storylines. However, there might have been some teasers dropped in tonight’s episode of the cobbles-based drama as the grandmother voiced her concern over Oliver’s (Emmanuel and Jeremiah Cheetham) ill-health. Will this heartbreaking plotline lead to her to leave her loved ones at the time they need her most?

It was revealed in recent episodes the stalwart’s grandson was suffering from a form of mitochondrial disease, a condition which is often life-limiting.

For the youngster’s parents, Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) and Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson), this was the most devastating news they could have ever received.

With their respective partners, Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) and Nick Tilsley (Ben Price), supporting them at the hospital, it has been up to Liz to try and keep things ticking over back on the cobbles.

The grandmother has been trying to remain optimistic for her other grandchildren but has always had concerns about the gravity of Oliver’s condition in the back of her mind.

However, in tonight’s instalment she seemed more upset than ever she couldn’t get anything right to help him, so could this lead her to pack her bags and leave?

Sat with granddaughter Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney), Simon Barlow (Alex Baine) and Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) in the Roys Rolls cafe, Liz ordered two fresh Eccles cakes.

Knowing how much her grandson loved sweet treats, she was hoping this would lift his spirits after the tough few days he had been through, having suffered multiple seizures.

Although it was a lovely idea, the toddler’s auntie reminded his grandmother Oliver was still in an induced coma and was, therefore, being fed through a tube.

This was like a dagger through the heart for the former Rovers barmaid as it dawned on her she didn’t have the power to improve the youngster’s condition.

Later on, she was joined by Nick’s mother, Gail Platt (Helen Worth), who was just as concerned about Oliver.

Noticing the Eccles cakes on the table, the step-grandmother said: “Do you know, Max and Lily turn their noses up at it. I mean, who doesn’t like an Eccles cake?”

More distracted about her grandson, Liz replied: “Oh Gail. I feel so flipping useless,” to which her table guest added: “Join the club.”

Turning back to the sweet treat, Steve’s mother explained: “I brought that for Oliver. He’s on a feeding tube, of course he can’t eat a cake.”

“I just wanted to do something nice. I feel surplus to requirement,” the stalwart continued as she expressed how neglected she felt.

Trying to boost her spirits, Gail told Liz: “I’ve got one son who’s running around goodness knows where, out of his mind worried about his wife.

“And another one sitting with Steve by Oliver’s bedside. It never stops,” she added, to which the youngster’s grandmother asked: “So what do we do?”

“I don’t know. Get back in the ring ready for round two,” Nick’s mother said, but the departing character still seemed very upset.
