Corrie icon unrecognisable 26 years after leaving soap amid Ken Barlow affair

One Coronation Street legend looks totally different from her days in the ITV soap, which included a steamy affair with Ken Barlow.

Denise Black played Denise Osbourne for several years on the cobbles, first appearing from 1992 until 1997 and then returning in 2007 and 2017.

Denise was a hairdresser who fell pregnant with Ken’s child, but turned him down when he tried to propose and the pair soon split.

Denise later gave birth to Daniel, who is still a soap regular to this day.

She took part in a series of major storylines including having an affair with brother-in-law Brian Dunkley and trying to reason with Daniel when he pushed Ken down the stairs and held him hostage.

Appearing in a whopping 289 episodes total, she was also known for her work in rival soap Emmerdale, in which she played Joanie Dingle.

Joanie was best known for her affair with Zak, which eventually broke up his marriage to the late matriarch Lisa Dingle.

Now the 64-year-old looks completely unrecognisable for a new TV role, and can be seen in period clothing with her silver hair worn in tight curlers atop her head.

A beige and grey headscarf completed the look as Denise clutched what looked to be a prop dead mouse, tucked into a green puffer coat and wearing a torn burgundy costume underneath.

Her character’s yellow – and thankfully fake – teeth were on display as she posed with a co-star for a cheeky selfie.

Denise is currently starring as Mrs Manzi in hit BBC period drama Call the Midwife.

But since her exit from both soaps, she has had an incredible television career, starring in everything from Benidorm to Holby City to Midsomer Murders.

It comes after she teased a return to Coronation Street, telling Inside Soap: “I saw on social media recently that Denise had given Daniel £40,000 – she’s doing better than me!

“Having seen Daniel as a man now, I could never understand why Denise didn’t go back; maybe we’ll find out, maybe we won’t.

“Rob Mallard, who plays Daniel, was huge fun to work with.”

She added: “If there was a need for Denise and the story was good, then I would love to go back.”
