Dan Walker has opened up on the moment he slept in and almost missed BBC Breakfast. The presenter co-hosts the news programme with Louise Minchin and revealed to Claudia Winkleman on her BBC Radio 2 show that he had was once called by Louise when she realised he hadn’t arrived in time for the show.

Dan began: “On Sunday night this week I managed to get a grand total of no sleep whatsoever.

“Maybe I’ve got you wrong, where you at a rave?” Claudia said. “I mean you’ve got three kids, you live in Sheffield, you’re a nice man.”

“It’s sporting related, there was no rave,” Dan replied. “It was football and then I had to be up at three for BBC Breakfast anyway and it didn’t finish till incredibly late.

“There was the obvious disappointment and then I laid in bed thinking about what could have happened, what might have happened if we’d won the penalties.”

“And then the alarm when off and I got up,” the presenter continued.

“I did BBC Breakfast on Monday having had zero hours sleep.”

“Can you just confirm [you have] a 3am wake up call?” Claudia said.

“Three feels a bit too early so my alarm can’t be an even number, I don’t know what you’re like with your alarms,” Dan said.

“My alarm goes off at three minutes past three, four minutes seems too late.”

“Do you know what my favourite thing is that I’ve gleaned from you?” Claudia asked.

“It’s that three is too early but three minutes past three is almost a lie-in let’s snuggle up. Have you ever slept through it?”

“Once,” Dan confirmed. “Never at home because I’ve got four alarms that go off and I’ve never reached alarm number four.”

Dan replied: “She sleeps like a horse so that’s fine I don’t know how horses sleep but you know what I mean.”

“I’m glad you have a good relationship because if my husband was on the radio and said, ‘Honestly she’s like a horse’…,” Claudia joked.

“I think she’s listening downstairs so sorry Sarah you’re a lovely sleeper,” Dan quipped.
