Darius Campbell Danesh updates – Fans all saying same thing about Colourblind hitting number one AGAIN | The Sun

DARIUS CAMPBELL Danesh’s death has sparked a resurgence in his hit single Colourblind becoming number one again.

The hit single reached number one twenty years ago in August 2002, and now it’s back in the iTunes charts after the singer died at the age of 41.

Fans have called it a “freaky coincidence” that the Pop Idol star’s song would reach the top spot once again two decades later.

“Number 1 in the uk charts 20 years ago today and back at number 1 in the iTunes Charts today! So so sad,” tweeted one fan.

“Seeing Darius at number one on iTunes is making me weirdly emotional,” said another fan.

Replying to the coincidence that the song’s success has repeated itself 20 years after it first hit the UK top 40, another fan said: “Wow that really is a freaky coincidence isn’t it! #RIPDarius”

Darius was ‘the perfect person’, says Pete Waterman

Paying tribute to his friend on today’s Good Morning Britain, legendary music producer Pete said: “Darius wanted to do too much, he had too much talent. I know that sounds silly, but sometimes you have to focus on what you really want, and he’d been investing, he was doing this amazing film in Hollywood.

Darius could have gone on to be bigger than Michael Buble. He’s got that talent.”

Pete revealed he had spoken to Darius weeks before his death about potentially reviving his music career after years spent working in theatre and film.

But the talent show judge admitted he valued their friendship too much to risk jeopardising it through the stresses of work.

He continued: “The word gentleman is overused but not in Darius’s case. He was the perfect person, so gentle, no cross words, he didn’t get angry.

Music producer Steve Lillywhite pays tribute to 'gentleman' Darius

Record producer Steve Lillywhite has paid tribute to Darius Campbell Danesh, describing the late singer as a "gentleman" and saying his story was one of redemption.

The Scottish singer-songwriter and actor, whose family announced his death aged 41 on Tuesday, was known as Darius Danesh when he made his first bid for fame on ITV show Popstars in 2001.

He also appeared on the first series of Pop Idol, which was won by Will Young, and after coming third on the show, Campbell Danesh turned down Simon Cowell's offer of a record deal and signed with music titan Lillywhite.

Lillywhite, 67, put U2 on the road to fame and has worked with some of the biggest names in music including the Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, Liam Gallagher's post-Oasis band Beady Eye and many more.

In 2011 he was made a CBE and honoured for services to music.

Lillywhite told the PA news agency: "When I heard the news yesterday, it affected me a lot more than I thought it would. Because it took me back to the whole… I mean his story is such a great story of redemption.

"You know, how he was basically, he was ridiculed on Pop Idol, he ended up coming third.

"And there wasn't a hell of a lot going on for him but what he had was this huge heart."

A friend of Lillywhite's, who was working with Campbell Danesh at the time, called him and suggested the two should meet.

Lillywhite said: "I met him and my first thought when I met him was, basically, he was a thoroughbred. He was like this incredible stallion.

"I mean, you know, tall, good-looking, he just reminded me of as good an example of the human race that you will ever find and it was fantastic."

Pop Idol host Neil Fox ‘saddened and shocked’ by Darius' death

Neil Fox, 61, who was a judge on Pop Idol, said he was “saddened and shocked” to hear the news about Darius. He recalled: “He had been such a big character on that first Pop Idol series.

“We lived near each other and often met up as his career moved forward with some big chart hits and West End shows.

Darius was 'driven to inspire others' says Gerard Butler

Butler, 51, who is best known for films such as 300, Law Abiding Citizen and Olympus Has Fallen and its sequels, said his friend was driven to "inspire others to better themselves".

"Our boy Darius was always constant and unwavering in his passion for life," Butler said.

"But a bigger constant was his dream to inspire others to better themselves. He talked the talk but boy, did he walk the walk.

"He had such purity of thought, a deep wisdom and constant gratitude for people, for life, a compassion towards all.

"His hilarious self-deprecating sense of humor (he was funny as shit) allowed him to stay humble – something he valued deeply. Darius' undying commitment to being of service to individuals- his family, his friends (none more so than me) and to the world at large made him the perfect friend.

"He led by example but he was also a teacher, as he pushed those he loved to be the best possible versions of themselves.

Butler added: "The universe unfolds in ways we may not agree with or even understand. Somewhere in there I believe there is, or will be, some meaning in why he left us so early.

"If it was nothing more than teaching us to live with that open heart, putting others first and never taking ourselves too seriously as we learn to traverse this wonky world we live in then, that might be enough.

"But something tells me there will be way more waves created by our boy Darius further down the line. My heart aches heavily. But going forward, I will beat my drum louder and celebrate life and its every beautiful moment because my brother showed me that was a pretty awesome way to go about it."

    Previous health fears

Just five years later Darius shocked fans when he  revealed he had slipped into a coma after contracting meningitis when he drank water from the Thames.

The terrifying incident happened when he filmed a promo clip for his charity Fresh2O Water filter – which is said to remove 99.9 per cent of all known “water-borne pathogens, bacteria and viruses” – and drank water from a Thames sewage outlet.

However, his bottle didn’t have a filter attached and he caught a virus which weakened his immune system and resulted in him contracting meningitis and cerebral oedema – swelling of his brain.

He later explained: “So I drank the water for the video and raised the funds but when I went to Glasgow to see my mum for her birthday I collapsed.

“It turned out I had a cerebral oedema where your brain swells bigger than your skull.

“My dad saved my life. He got me to hospital, they diagnosed it quickly. I had bacterial meningitis.”
