'Dexter' Season 9: How to Watch the Revival When It Comes Out

It took several years, but Dexter is finally coming back. Premiering in 2006, the TV show focused on Dexter Morgan, a blood-spatter expert moonlighting as a serial killer. It ran for eight seasons before ending in 2013 with one of the most-hated finales ever. But the revival will (hopefully) atone for those missteps.

Ever since the announcement, fans have been amped to see where the story goes next. If you’re planning on tuning in, here’s what you need to know about Dexter Season 9, including how to watch it.

What the ‘Dexter’ revival is about

The finale had Dexter move to Oregon and become a lumberjack, but that’s not where the revival is picking up. As showrunner Clyde Phillips previously told The Hollywood Reporter:

“We basically do get to start from scratch. We want this to not be Dexter Season 9. Ten years, or however many years, have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage. So far as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was. It’s a great opportunity to write a second finale.”

It has since been revealed that Dexter has moved to the fictional New York town Iron Lake. It’s unclear if he’s been killing in the time since he moved, but Phillips told TV Insider that people will die moving forward.

“Dexter always has what we call ‘the dark passenger’ living inside him,” he explained. “He is more grounded than he’s ever been, but that dark passenger is a voice he cannot deny. This is Dexter. People are going to die.”

So far, Michael C. Hall (Dexter Morgan) is the only original cast member confirmed for the show, but there are plenty of new faces.

Notably, Clancy Brown of The Crown will star as villain Kurt Caldwell. TV Line notes Caldwell is a community figure who “realized the American dream by going from driving big rigs, just like his father did, to now owning several trucks and the local truck stop. Powerful, generous, loved by everyone — he’s a true man of the people. If he’s got your back, consider yourself blessed. But should you cross Kurt, or hurt anyone that he cares for, God help you.”

Here’s how to watch the ‘Dexter’ revival

Just as before, the Dexter revival will air on Showtime, which fans can access either via cable or app. Viewers also have the option of watching it through services such as Amazon Prime or Hulu, but you have a Showtime subscription.

As of writing, the release date for Dexter Season 9 is not yet known, but production began earlier in 2021. As long as everything goes according to plan, it should be out sometime later that year. Stay tuned to Showbiz Cheat Sheet for more details on the show as they become available.
