Disney+: Why People Say 'Loki' Will Be a Lot Like 'Forrest Gump'

With Disney+ set to release a slew of Marvel-aimed shows in 2020 and 2021, expectations are at an all-time high, as the actors who famously portray saviors and villains on the silver screen are set to make their way to the small screen. Reports indicate that the movies and shows will intermingle, likely leading to the most preeminent conversation between the two forms of entertainment consumption in history. As the universe expands, certain shows are attracting more attention than others. As for fans, most cannot wait to see Tom Hiddleston reprise Loki in a series all his own.

So, what do we know so far about the mini-series? Loki will be released on Disney+ in the Spring of 2021. As for the narrative, here’s where things get a little tricky. Loki may have died in Avengers: Infinity War, following his redemptive narrative arc; however, an earlier — less fully realized — version of Loki, escaped with the Tesseract during Endgame. No one knows where or when he went, which will likely lay the groundwork for the upcoming series.

Why ‘Loki’ may feel like an action-packed ‘Forrest Gump’

With an alternate universe left to explore, Loki can wind up anywhere. The Hollywood Reporter released an article in February of 2019, stating “Loki as the trickster and shape-shifter pops up throughout human history as an unlikely influencer on historical events.”

Following this Hollywood Reporter article, several other digital media publications released pieces with similar prophecies, arguing that Loki will come to shape history and society as we have come to know it, in such a way that resembles Forrest Gump.  This theory received a bit more backing when Kevin Feige’s presentation for Loki included a blurry image set in the 1970s; viewers drew the conclusion based on a JAWS billboard hanging in the background.

Forrest Gump shaped history in a way that was often quite light-hearted and imbued with reflective nostalgia. The history-altering scenes ranged from teaching Elvis his famous dance moves to investing in Apple. While some alterations focused on less positive moments in history, Forrest Gump is a gentle and kind soul; meaning, Loki’s history-altering trajectory may bear far steeper consequences, and take a darker tone. However, the overall concept may remain synonymous.

Loki will appear as a character not yet redeemed; thus, he may catalyze wars and conflicts, or have a hand in the deaths of major public figures. While Loki’s influence over history, and the moments he will impact, remain unknown, this series is sure to be entertaining. People will be waiting, each episode, to see what he changes next, which, if done correctly, will make for quite the suspenseful joyride.

Loki has landed Michael Waldon as its showrunner; he is set to write the plot, act as the show creator, and he will executive produce the series. Hopefully, the series manages to gain some solid co-stars and sprinkles in a few familiar faces from previous MCU installments. A Thor appearance may be unlikely; however, that would be the icing on the cake.
