Doctor Who fans have been speculating about Jodie Whittaker leaving her role as the Doctor in the BBC series over the past year. Many names have been thrown into the mix as to who could replace her including the likes of Line of Duty actress Vicky McClure, It’s a Sin star Olly Alexander and more recently, BAFTA winner Michaela Coel. Despite the rumours of Jodie leaving the show, nothing has been confirmed by the BBC.

Paapa, who starred alongside Michaela in the award-winning drama I May Destroy You, spoke with Express.co.uk at the 25th Anniversary South Bank Sky Arts Awards on Monday.

Speaking about whether he thought Michaela could be the next Time Lord, Paapa simply replied: “I think she could be really good.”

Michaela is also the bookies’ current favourite to replace Jodie in the series.

TV presenter Richard Ayoade is also in the running at odds of 9/1.

In June, Jodie’s exit from Doctor Who seemed to be confirmed after it was reported she would feature in two special episodes in 2022.

According to the Daily Mirror, Jodie will film the two back-to-back specials, which will air on BBC One next year.

The publication reported she will leave Doctor Who when she finishes filming the specials in the next couple of months.

This could mean the second special will contain the regeneration scene where Jodie’s character morphs into the 14th Doctor.

The speculation about Jodie’s exit comes after eagle-eyed fans spotted the actress won’t be appearing on the cover of the Doctor Who Annual for 2022.

It’s been revealed Jodie won’t be on the cover of the Doctor Who Annual for 2022, despite being the current actor in the Time Lord role.

Jodie became the first female to play the Time Lord when she was named the 13th Doctor Who in 2017.

Elsewhere in the interview, Paapa also discussed the possibility of another series of I May Destroy You.

The BBC drama was a thought-provoking and provocative exploration of the question of sexual consent.

It followed Arabella (played by Michaela Coel), a millennial author who has just released a debut novel.

While taking a break from writing the sequel to her book, she ends up on a night out with friends.

But the next morning, something isn’t right, and she works to find out exactly what happened to her.

Paapa, who played Arabella’s best friend Kwame, shut down the idea of another series.

“I wouldn’t hold your breath,” the actor admitted.

“When we were making the show, (it wasn’t) with the intention of it becoming an ongoing kind of piece.

“It was a story that we wanted to tell within those 12 episodes, and we were satisfied with where we got to.”

Doctor Who and I May Destroy You is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
