EastEnders Roxy Mitchell return confirmed six years after heartbreaking exit

EastEnders star Rita Simons will reprise her role as Roxy Mitchell six years after the character tragically died alongside her sister, Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Womack).

In a surprise twist, the 46-year-old actress is making an epic comeback to the BBC soap in special scenes which will air on Thursday (April 27).

As viewers of soap will know, Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) has faced heartache in recent months following his daughter’s mental health struggle.

Amy Mitchell’s (Ellie Dadd) mental state has spiralled after she discovered that her dad’s wife Denise Fox (Diane Parish) had a fling with Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara).

With the breakdown of Denise and Jack's marriage tearing the Branning's apart, the family attend a group therapy session where Amy is encouraged to open up about the loss of her mum.

During the session, Amy zones out and Roxy appears as a figment of her imagination.

This isn't the first time the actress has stepped back into Roxy's shoes since her tragic exit as she briefly reprised the role in a voiceover cameo in May 2019.

Touching upon Rita's return to the soap, EastEnders' Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw said: "I’m thrilled to welcome the fabulous Rita back to the iconic role of Roxy Mitchell for these special scenes.

"Although the character was last seen on-screen in January 2017, Roxy still remains a fan favourite.

"We know our audiences will be thrilled at her short return as Amy seeks some all-important answers from her mum at this point in the storyline."

Fans were left devastated back in 2017 when the iconic duo were killed off on New Year's Day after a decade in Albert Square.

The explosive episode saw a drunk Roxy, who had recently turned to substance abuse, decide to take a late-night dip in the pool before she began to struggle.

In an attempt to save her sister, Ronnie threw herself into the water while wearing her wedding dress and veil.

The newlywed began to struggle against the material however, and viewers heard a haunting scream as she began to drown.

The heartbreaking scene ended with the sisters motionless in the water, floating side by side as they passed away.
