Emmerdale youngster Arthur Thomas (played by Alfie Clarke) has taken a backseat of late, but during Friday’s ITV instalment, it became apparent to viewers that the schoolboy is struggling to cope. It seemed Arthur had a lot on his mind and as he sat alone in the cafe, Nicola King (Nicola Wheeler) sensed something was up.

Despite trying to get him to open up, Arthur disappeared before Nicola could probe further.

Later on, Arthur’s love interest, April (Amelia Flanagan) confided in Rhona (Zoe Henry) about “something being off” with her pal.

Elsewhere, Arthur joined Noah (Jack Downham) and Marcus (Darcy Grey) as they painted the wall of the village hall.

However, things took a turn when the schoolboy was quizzed over his relationship with April.

“So who’s the talented one in your double act?” Noah asked as Arthur hit back: “We’re just friends.”

Noah teased: “Right? But is that friends with or without benefits.”

“You can’t ask him that,” Marcus weighed in before Noah later added: “He still hasn’t replied.”

Marcus tried to change the subject, but it was clear Noah wasn’t going to let it go.

“I reckon Arthur’s got a secret he doesn’t want to share with us,” Noah taunted.

“Shut up,” Arthur shouted as Marcus said: “He’s only trying to wind you up.”

However, clearly upset, Arthur ran off and he was later seen weeping by the grave of his dad, Ashley (John Middleton) who died in 2017.

Following Friday’s instalment, fans took to social media to share their theories about how Arthur’s storyline will play out.

Another fan predicted that Marcus may have something to do with his storyline.

“I was wondering if Arthur might be gay when April was trying to let him know she liked him. #Emmerdale,” user @BovaryCee asked.

User @lindibea penned: “Bless Arthur – think he’s confused about his sexuality #Emmerdale.”

Laura Lou praised: “Loved the scene with Nicola and Arthur. Really brilliantly done. And there’s more to come too. Bravo, @nicola_wheeler and Alfie Clarke.” (sic).

“Is Marcus trying to suss out if Arthur is gay?” Doreen Morfitt asked.

Felix Wood tweeted: “Er I’m confused, why did Marcus and Noah’s conversation make Arthur go to Ashley’s grave!?!? #Emmerdale.”

He later said: “Yeah Marcus seems to guess it, could see Arthur coming out to him.”

While Owen theorised: “It’ll end up that Marcus will support Arthur at some point won’t it?”

Chris P went on to say: “Does Marcus sense Arthur’s dilemma?”
