Emmerdales Lisa Riley reveals BTS details about Mandys history-making outfits
ITV soap Emmerdale is known for its explosive weddings, with previous twists including kidnaps and deadly storms. So it comes as no surprise that Charity Dingle and Mackenzie Boyd’s nuptials will be anything but smooth sailing.
To celebrate the upcoming wedding, OK! was lucky enough to travel to the Yorkshire Dales to learn everything about the dramatic will-they-won't-they ceremony, as well as have a sneak peek at filming.
And when we arrive, the set is buzzing as cast and crew get stuck in for a busy few days of filming at St Mary’s Church. Expecting to see glamorous outfits and a bridal gown, it is a surprise to be confronted by The A Team’s "Howling Mad" Murdock, Templeton "Face" Peck and John "Hannibal" Smith costumes.
However, one person who isn't wearing a costume is Mandy Dingle star Lisa Riley, who is instead wearing a gorgeous orange sequinned dress complete with matching accessories for the scenes.
And actress Lisa, 46, who has been an integral part of the Dingle family ever since her character Mandy stepped foot in the village in 1995, tells us she was shocked over the stylish outfit, which even saw cast members say "I'd wear that!"
Lisa is no stranger to a bold bridal costume as Mandy wore a leopard print wedding dress for her doomed wedding to Paul Ashdale in 2021, which she jokes "will go down in history".
Talking to OK! and other press, Lisa tells us: "The thing about the Dingle girls is we tend to let them do whatever we want. We don't go: ‘Oh no, I'm not gonna wear that,’ we go with the flow," she insists.
And having fun is important for Lisa, who tells us: "I do that in my own life. I don't take life too seriously. I always make a joke if anything gets too serious."
Talking further about her character's costumes, Lisa says: "Ian and Lynne they are Mandy's shopping angels, the pair of them.
"I worked with Ian like years ago when I was a kid at Granada back in the day. And he was a dresser and now he's the main designer of the whole show.
"We kind of totally sing from the same hymn sheet and he'll sketch stuff, he'll send me a WhatsApp or he'll go online and look at stuff but obviously he's got to look at the colour scheme today."
"We definitely knew we were going rusty orange all day so the human satsuma was gonna happen in a Strictly style!" Lisa jokes about her orange sequinned outfit.
She adds: "But yeah, he's brilliant… we get our scripts every 15 days, right. But they'll get them two in advance. For example, I was on the train coming back from London last night and Lynne says: 'Hi, gorge, Mandy's got a really cool Tinder episode coming up. The stage direction is wow wow wow outfit.'
"So then we'll just go: 'Oh, okay', and now we're bouncing ideas of what it's going to be so the reply was: 'Right, let's go crystal bolero!'"
The upcoming wedding scenes see Moira Dingle help Charity surprise superfan Mack with a replica A-Team van as a gift but as the couple (complete in fancy dress) decide to get steamy in the vehicle, they’re soon arrested by PC Swirling as the van’s been involved in a robbery!
Spending the night in cells, the couple are unsure if the wedding can go ahead but they’re soon released as reluctant vicar, Charles Anderson, agrees to marry them in their costumes.
But in true soap style, pregnant Chloe Harris, who Mackenzie had a one-night stand with last year, goes into labour just before the wedding and when Mackenzie learns the news, he leaves the church on a mission while Charity fears she’s been jilted!
And it’s clear the Dingles are just as close off-screen as Lisa tells us of the filming: "When it’s a Dingle [wedding], we get on so well. It is more the crew I feel desperately sorry for because to keep us all tame and to shut us up…"
