Emmy Predictions 2021: Does Anyone Have a Chance at Beating 'Ted Lasso' Star Jason Sudeikis?

The Emmys are television’s biggest night. And it looks like the star of this year’s ceremony could be the AppleTV+ comedy Ted Lasso. The beloved fish-out-of-water sports comedy about the American coach of a professional English soccer club scored 20 nominations for season 1.

Including one in the Best Comedy Actor category for star Jason Sudeikis. Does anyone have a chance of beating the Saturday Night Live alum?

‘Ted Lasso’ made Emmy history with 20 nominations

Ted Lasso doesn’t really care about wins and losses, but that just might change on Emmy night. The critical darling made history this summer when it received 20 nominations. Breaking Glee’s record for most nominations for a comedy series in its first season.

Ted Lasso received nods for Best Comedy Series, Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Sudeikis, Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple, and Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy for Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammed, and Jeremy Swift.

The Ted Lasso crew also got some recognition with Creative Arts Emmy nominations in writing, directing, casting, production design, sound editing and mixing, and main title design.

Jason Sudeikis is part of a star-studded category

Sudeikis received his first Emmy nomination in the Best Comedy Actor category this year. And it came at a time when he is up against some serious competition. He’ll be facing off against Oscar Winner Michael Douglas, who received a nomination for his performance in The Kominsky Method.

His Saturday Night Live co-star Kenan Thompson also received a nomination for his new sitcom Kenan. As did William H. Macy for his performance in Shameless. Rounding out the list of nominees is Anthony Anderson, who scored his seventh straight nomination in the category for his performance in Black-ish.

Does anyone have a chance of beating ‘Ted Lasso’ star Jason Sudeikis at the Emmys?

With five big names in the Best Comedy Actor category, you might think that everyone has a good shot at taking home the trophy. But according to Gold Derby, there’s no doubt that Sudeikis will win the prize.

They have the odds on Sudeikis at 3/1, and two dozen Emmy experts unanimously predicted that the Ted Lasso star would win. Sudeikis’ odds are far ahead of the second-place Douglas. The Hollywood predictions site has Anderson in third, Thompson in fourth, and Macy in fifth.

This is the last chance for some nominees

Douglas received two prior Emmy nominations for starring in The Kominsky Method. But he lost to Barry’s Bill Hader and Schitt’s Creek star Eugene Levy. This is the Netflix comedy’s last season, which gives Emmy voters their last chance to give Douglas an award for playing acting coach Sandy Kominsky.

This is also Macy’s last opportunity to win for Shameless. He’s been nominated six times for his portrayal of deadbeat dad Frank Gallagher, and that dramedy has officially come to an end.

Anderson — who has 11 career nominations, but zero wins — will get one more chance to win for Black-ish if he doesn’t win this time around. The ABC comedy is about to begin its 8th and final season.

Thompson has already won an Emmy for writing the SNL song Come Back, Barack. If he doesn’t win the Best Comedy Actor category this year, he might have a chance in 2022 since NBC picked up Kenan for season 2.

Jason Sudeikis has already won awards for ‘Ted Lasso’ and now it’s time for the Emmy

One of the reasons that Sudeikis is the hands-down favorite to win the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series is because he’s already won all of the winter awards in that category. Including the Golden Globe, the Critics Choice Award, and the SAG award.

It also helps that Ted Lasso is the frontrunner in the race for Best Comedy Series. And, Emmy voters got the chance to watch the first episodes of season 2 while they were voting, which helped Ted Lasso stay top of mind.

The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards will air Sunday, September 19 on CBS. The 2021 Creative  Arts Emmy Awards will air Saturday, September 18 on FXX.
