Giada De Laurentiis Natural Hair Actually Gets In the Way When She Films Her Show

Like her fellow Food Network star, Ina Garten, Giada De Laurentiis has developed a uniform of sorts for when she’s in front of the camera. Garten’s known for wearing the same button-down shirts but as for the Le Cordon Bleu-trained De Laurentiis, she has a habit of straightening her naturally curly hair when she’s going on TV.

Giada De Laurentiis ‘never’ brushes her hair

De Laurentiis is very low maintenance when it comes to her hair. As she told Allure in June 2012 it dates back to her childhood. As a kid, she didn’t like her hair so she left it alone.

“My hair’s curly and growing up, I didn’t do squat with it because I disliked it,” she said. “My mom kept it super short, so until I was 12 and grew boobs, everyone thought I was a boy.”

How low maintenance is her haircare routine? De Laurentiis doesn’t take a brush to her hair. Like, ever.

“I never brush my hair—if I did, it’d be out to here,” she said.

A producer told Giada De Laurentiis they could ‘see holes’ in her hair on camera

Watch early episodes of Everyday Italian from 2003 when it premiered on the Food Network and see De Laurentiis sporting her naturally curly hair. These days the 50-year-old cookbook author typically wears her hair straight when she’s in front of the camera and there’s a reason for it.

“When I first wore it curly when filming, the producer said he could see holes in my hair and that the light kept coming through,” she told Allure.

Now De Laurentiis leaves her hair curly when she’s not going on TV.

“I wear it curly when I’m not working, but wash and get a blowout once or twice a week when I’m shooting—or maybe more if I’m grilling,” she explained.

The Food Network star gets complaints for wearing bracelets during filming and wears them anyway

Bracelets are how De Laurentiis spruces up her outfits. As she told The Cut in May 2018 her “wardrobe is not really as sophisticated as people might think” which is why she likes to wear bracelets.

The Eat Better, Feel Better author admitted that despite getting complaints about it from the film crew for her Food Network show she still wears them.

“I will tell you that on my show I get complaints from my producer or my sound person, telling me that my bracelets are getting in the way of things,” she said. “But you know what? I like them! If I’m going to be casual then something has to glam me up.”

So that’s why De Laurentiis’ natural hair doesn’t get any air time and also why fans will probably see her with bracelets on when she’s in front of the camera. The way she does her hair and the jewelry she wears has become part of her unofficial TV uniform.
