Harry are Meghan are ‘stifled’ by royals like Princess Diana – says Paul Burrell

Princess Diana's former butler claimed she felt "stifled" in the Royal family just like Meghan and Harry.

Paul Burrell, 61, spoke in an interview with Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain after the Duke and Duchess announced plans to step down as senior royals.

Paul, who has known Harry since he was a boy, threw his support behind the couple, and told how Princess Diana would have wanted to split her time between Britain and North America, like Meghan and Harry plan to do.

Speaking from his home in Florida, Burrell explained: "I think of Diana what she would have wanted. She would have told them to marry for love – which they have.

"She would have wanted them to be respectful and kind to their wives – which they clearly are.

"But be happy – because Diana wasn't. And clearly Harry and Meghan are not happy in the environment they are in, being stifled by the royal household.

"As I’ve seen this unfold in America, I’ve been thinking of her [Diana] and she would have given the boys advice and said to them, 'Marry for love', which they have, 'Be respectful and kind to your wife', which they both have, but 'Be happy'.

"Because Diana wasn’t and clearly Meghan and Harry aren’t happy in the environment they're in – being stifled by the royal household."

Paul also said he wasn't surprised the royal couple were planning on moving to North America.

He said: "Diana found that impossible marrying the whole family and I think Harry wants to follow mum's footsteps.

"You also knew Diana and her relationship with her boys. I served the lunch that day, and Diana had the same traits of cutting people off [as Meghan].

"Is it any surprise Harry wants to follow in his mother's footsteps and follow her example.

"She had the plans for that on her sitting room floor to buy a home in Malibu when she went away to the Mediterranean. She was going to buy that property so is it any surprise Harry is following his wife's dreams and his mum's footsteps."

Burrell also told how he felt sorry for The Queen, who is meeting Harry today for the first time since he and Meghan announced they are stepping back from royal life, with Meghan joining the chat via Skype from her home in Canada.

He said: "I’m hoping William can bring a strong bridge towards his brother during this meeting and bring him back into the fold, as his brother, but Harry wants to be more of a humanitarian than a royal.

"I feel very sorry for the queen, of course… 93 years old, our monarch has suffered greatly over the years and seen a lot happen to her family, and she’s moved with the times."

Palace sources claim the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shunned repeated attempts to discuss their roles in a slimmed-down monarchy.

Harry and Meghan have been advised they will make millions by being “financially independent” and free to do big-money corporate deals.
