How Will Amazon Do At the 2019 Emmy Awards?
The Emmys are, at present, a contest between the streaming services and the premium cable outlets, with little competition from the usual networks. While Netflix and HBO are the two biggest contenders, others, like Amazon’s Prime Video, are also in the running. Here’s how this service has done in years past.
What was Amazon’s first original series to win an Emmy?
Though we think of Netflix as the pioneer when it comes to original streaming content, Amazon Studios kicked off its own programming right around the same time, in 2013. The first couple of series in drama and comedy didn’t do so well, but soon enough, they had a handful of hits on their hands.
Amazon first went to the Emmys with the comedy Transparent in 2015, winning in prominent categories like Outstanding Lead Actor for Jeffrey Tambor. The series was soon joined by shows like Mozart in the Jungle and The Man in the High Castle at the Creative Arts Emmys.
Last year was a great year for Amazon at the Emmys
In 2018, Amazon had a new contender in the running for multiple Emmys: The dramedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel raked in an impressive 14 nominations. What’s more, it won more than half of them, including top prizes like Outstanding Comedy Series, writing and director for series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, and acting nods for Lead Actress Rachel Brosnahan and Supporting Actress Alex Borstein.
In addition to Season 1 Mrs. Maisel, which was the biggest winner of all of the series nominated at the 2018 Primetime Emmys, Prime Video didn’t have any other winning shows. But fortunately, this is a mistake they’ve already amended this year.
How many 2019 Emmys is Amazon nominated for?
At the Creative Arts Emmy ceremony last year, Amazon took in eight awards. Six of those went to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 2, including both the Outstanding Guest Actor and Actress In A Comedy Series categories. But two went to Season 2 of Fleabag, a UK series that is distributed via Amazon Prime in the U.S.
Now, on Sunday, Amazon has 18 more chances to win. Mrs. Maisel is up for seven awards, while Fleabag is in a close second with six. Additionally, the BBC One miniseries A Very English Scandal has earned four nods.
Does Amazon have an advantage?
There’s usually an assumed winner going into the Emmy Awards. Last year, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was something of a dark horse, but without the comedy powerhouse of Veep in the way, it was able to tread new ground. This year, it will be competing against Veep, so the final season of the HBO series could knock it off the top rung.
However, Prime Video does have one good thing going for it: No drama nominees. This is, undoubtedly, the year of Game of Thrones, as it’s another beloved HBO series with a massive following and many of past wins under its belt. Because Prime isn’t competing in the drama categories again GoT, it doesn’t have to worry about losing to HBO there as well.
