On Monday morning, BBC Breakfast host Dan Walker was joined by Sally Nugent to give the latest news and headlines. However, talk soon turned to Dan’s recent injury he sustained while training for Strictly Come Dancing, which he acquired when running into a glass door, ultimately putting his rehearsal time on the back-burner.

Sally first introduced the topic when she turned to Dan and said: “It’s been a busy weekend for you, hasn’t it?”

Referring to Dan’s Strictly injury, Sally joked: “When I said to you, ‘Good luck on Strictly, knock yourself out’, I didn’t exactly mean…”

Dan laughed and replied: “I’m alright, thank you for your lovely wishes, I had to take a slight break from training, so I’m a bit behind, but we’ve got until next Saturday to get ready for the live show.”

Sally asked: “But you’re okay?” with Dan confirming, “I’m okay, I’ve no longer got a headache, and I’m allowed to get back on the dancefloor.”

“And you’re super, super busy, and you’ve got, I think, the dream partner, haven’t you? You’ve got a really good partnership.”

“She is amazing, yeah,” Dan said of his partner Nadiya Bychkova as a VT rolled of their first meeting.

Back in the studio, Sally quoted Dan and exclaimed: “‘Are you disappointed by this’ Daniel, come on!”

“She’s brilliant, she’s such an amazing dancer, so I didn’t realise just quite how good she was, she’s the only two-time dance world champion.

“That means essentially she does Latin and ballroom, so she does everything, and she’s been a world champion twice back-to-back.”

Sally went on to ask: “And you have already started learning your first dance haven’t you?” to which Dan interrupted: “I have, but I can’t tell you what it is yet.

“I’ll be killed by the Strictly ninja’s,” he joked, as Sally continued: “How is it, are you managing to remember it all this is the thing I would worry about?”

Dan then explained that he has to draw Nadiya’s face on his hand when they are training, so he knows what position to get into.

He explained: “What we’ve worked out is that I have to have pictures in my head all the time, and I was trying to get into the correct ballroom position.

“Trying to learn general basics, and if I draw Nadiya’s face on my hand, it enables me to get here, I’ve got to put that towards me and turn it towards her.”

While Dan explained his techniques, Sally sat next to him, looking confused about his new tactics.

“Every time we train, I draw her face on my hand, and this we call it ‘Handiya’, so when we dance about, she shouts ‘Handiya!’ to me and then I know to get in the correct ballroom position.”

Dan joked that he had drawn on his hand with permanent marker, to which Sally replied: “You’re going to need it for several weeks, keep it there, several weeks”

Sally’s optimism took Dan by surprise, as he said: “Oh right, okay, I’m not sure you’re backing the right horse there, but I’m determined to enjoy it while it lasts.”

Whilst Sally’s optimism for Dan to win the dance competition is high, bookmakers like Ladbrokes have tipped Dan to win at just 33/1.

EastEnders actor Rose Ayling-Ellis is top to win Strictly at 7/2 with Rhys Stephenson following at 4/1 and Tom Fletcher 6/1.

Loose Women presenter Judi Love is tipped to be first eliminated from the show at 7/2, with Sara Davies and Nina Wadia close behind.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
