Kate Garraway's daughter is desperate to have her dad home as she's decided to be a lawyer and misses their debates

KATE Garraway's daughter Darcey is desperate for critically ill dad Derek to return home from hospital and can't wait to continue their "massive" debates.

The 14-year-old, who has set her sights on becoming a barrister, is missing the back and forth with her dad – who remains in intensive care after battling coronavirus.

Speaking to Hello! Kate said: "Darcey, who wants to be a barrister, said: 'Dad, you'd better get better soon because I'm getting cleverer every day. You'll never win an argument if you don't get well soon.' The two of them used to have massive debates about teenagers' rights all the time."

The teen has also planned a surprise for Derek's returns home, by sowing an assortment of fruit and vegetable seeds in the family garden.

Kate explained: "She also put a strawberry plant next to his favourite chair so that he can reach down for them when he sits there, saying: 'Why would we ever need to go to Tuscany when we've got this?'"

The Good Morning Britain star, 53, said Derek has lost a "huge amount of weight" during his battle with coronavirus.

Brave Kate told how he looked "so different" when she saw him during an iPad video call after nurses were forced to shave his face because his beard grew too big.

The couple's children Darcey and Billy, ten, have been FaceTiming their dad, and it is the first time they have seen him without facial hair.

Kate revealed in the interview that Derek had emerged from his coma after 98 days in hospital and even opened his eyes.

She said: "“When medical staff say, ‘Good morning, Derek,’ he sometimes opens his eyes. We and the doctors are doing everything we can so that he can start to recover.”

However, in a rare social media post she also sounded a note of caution, saying the day he returned home having recovered still seemed "very uncertain" amid these "ghastly times".

She wrote: "The future we are really hoping for , Derek recovering & coming home is not nearly in sight & very uncertain.

"But it feels positive to share how we are trying to keep ourselves going as I know so many are dealing with terrible challenges in all sorts of ways as we all try to emerge from these ghastly times, just as we continue to hope Derek can emerge from his minimum state of consciousness.

"I hope reading this helps in some way . Thank you everyone for your lovely good wishes and for sending me your stories of how you’ve been coping too."

It is the first time Kate has posted on Instagram since Father's Day on June 21 when she updated fans on Derek's condition.
