Departed Detective Dan Espinoza (played by Kevin Alejandro) has somehow returned in the first look at Lucifer’s sixth season. Fans went wild when the Netflix drama revealed the new images on Twitter ahead of the show’s return this September.

The first look at the highly anticipated sixth season of Lucifer has finally been released, and it contains a wealth of surprises.

Netflix announced the series would be returning for its final outing much earlier than expected, with ten brand new episodes dropping on September 10.

Now, hopes for the first teaser trailer for the last season have been raised after more than 60 new stills were released by the streaming service.

The images revealed an exciting first look at Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis), Chloe Decker (Lauren German), Ella Lopez (Aimee Garcia) and Linda Martin (Rachael Harris).

Plus, returning guest character Eve (Inbar Lavi) will be back as a permanent love interest for the new Queen of Hell, Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt).

However, it was Lucifer’s brother Amenadiel (DB Woodside) appearing alongside ‘Detective Douche’ Dan Espinoza that caught the attention of most fans.

Lucifer’s long-standing office rival was tragically killed by French mercenaries in the latest season, which tore ‘Lucifans’ hearts to shreds in May.

Amenadiel’s confession to Lucifer that Dan hadn’t made it to Hell, along with comments from showrunners Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson, confirmed the detective would indeed be coming back to the series in some capacity.

Even so, fans weren’t expecting the series to be so upfront about his resurrection when he appeared with Amenadiel in one of the first images of the new season.

“EXCUSE ME PHOTO NO. 3,” exclaimed one fan in the comments, as Dan appeared in the third image of the latest batch of stills.

Another replied in speculation: “I hope he becomes an angel.”

The first look at Amenadiel and Dan in season six seemingly confirms Dan will be back on Earth in some form or another.

In the new season, it appears Amenadiel will take on a new position as an LAPD police officer as he’s dressed in uniform and interviewing a witness.

Meanwhile, Dan is situated in the background of the scene, suggesting the late detective has taken on a more ethereal form.

Could Lucifer’s office rival be haunting his friends from beyond the grave, or is the guilt-ridden Amenadiel simply hallucinating Dan’s presence?

Much like his angelic brother, Lucifer Morningstar will also be taking on a very new role in the upcoming final run for the Biblical Netflix drama.

After defeating his twin brother and sacrificing himself for Chloe, the devil became the new ruler of creation following God’s (Dennis Haysbert) retirement.

With Dan presumed to be in Hell, Lucifer may use his newfound abilities to raise him from perdition.

Alternatively, a behind-the-scenes snap featuring a Back to the Future-style Delorean had some fans thinking Lucifer could simply turn back time and reverse Dan’s death altogether.

However his return comes about, fans will no doubt be thrilled to see the douchey detective get one more shot at redemption before the series comes to an end.

Lucifer season 6 will be released on Friday, September 10 on Netflix.
