Marvel cancelled movies: Which movies in the MCU have been delayed due to coronavirus?

The MCU has changed the cinematic landscape for good, with fans expecting their favourite superheroes to grace their screens at least twice a year. The first in the upcoming slate was Black Widow, but now the movie has been delayed with no news as to its new release. But which other movies are likely to be delayed or cancelled in the Marvel world?

Sadly, it looks as though things have ground to halt thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.

Recently, it has been announced the Black Widow release, scheduled for May 1, has been postponed.

This is likely due to cinemas closing, government guidelines and a huge number of other reasons.

After this announcement, it was also reported production had been suspended for Marvel’s upcoming movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, as well as Disney+ series Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision and Loki.

The release of Black Widow has been pushed back with no indication of its release date, and news is yet to surface about the fate of the following Marvel film The Eternals.

Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at Boxoffice.com, says that moving “Black Widow” could have a “cascading effect” on the rest of Marvel slate.

Naturally, all the Marvel movies are released in a specific order, with post and mid-credits scenes linking the stories to upcoming films.

These scenes sometimes even introduce new characters, plotlines and villains into the mix.

As a result, a delay of one movie could mean all the rest will need to follow suit, meaning The Eternals which was scheduled to be released in Autumn 2020, will have to be released at a later date, thus affecting all other releases for the franchise.

Some fans are calling on Disney to launch Black Widow on their new streaming platform, Disney+, exclusively to take the place of the film’s cinematic release.

This has been done already with Frozen 2, which has been released on the platform three months earlier than anticipated, and Universal studios have taken to releasing some of their movies online as well, such as Trolls World Tour.

As well as this, fellow superhero movie Birds of Prey is to be released online earlier than expected as well.

After Universal announced their intentions to put some films out, Cathy Yan, the movie’s director, tweeted: “I would not be opposed to putting Birds of Prey on VOD earlier.”

The difference is, with these films, they all had cinematic releases (except for Trolls World Tour) which Black Widow would not receive.

At the time of writing, it is uncertain whether this is a move Disney would even consider, but one thing we do know is the MCU will be back, but perhaps a little while later than anticipated.

Black Widow is expected to have a cinematic release, so keep an eye on Express.co.uk for updates.
