The former Health Secretary has been making “positive changes” during his time in the jungle, so he can become “accepted” by his campmates. However, a body language expert has explained why his bid to rebuild his public image is yet to convince some of his I’m A Celebrity co-stars.

Darren Stanton, a former police officer who used his expertise to uncover the truth when interviewing suspects, has pointed out the “absolute distaste” shown by co-stars Mike Tindall and Chris Moyles towards Matt.

Speaking on behalf of Betfair, Darren revealed while “Matt has actually performed well and is clearly throwing himself into the process,” he believes Matt is coming across “as less authentic”.

“During the daily coronavirus briefings, Matt was often very still and stoic,” he said.

“In the most recent episode, we saw these same traits when Scarlette, Jill and Babatunde were teaching Matt to dance.”

He added: “Although Matt was willing to give it a go, his performance was reminiscent of a zombie.

“Matt appears to be holding back and clearly still has that stiffness in him, which suggests that he is still being quite guarded.”

While some campmates like Sue Cleaver have accepted Matt into the group, Darren says others like Mike and Chris still have “great issues with Matt.”

“I don’t think Matt did himself any favours at all when he was sat talking to Seann about politicians answering questions,” Darren stated.

“Seann appeared to take a childlike approach to the conversation and was clearly curious about what goes on behind the curtain.”

The expert explained “not all the campmates reacted in the same way such as Mike and Chris who were both sitting and listening”.

“Their faces flashed expressions of absolute distaste and contempt since the whole topic of conversation was blatantly about hoodwinking and manipulating in order to avoid being asked a question,” Darren said.

“It’s clear that Mike and Chris are still very cautious of Matt.”

Matt has faced several Bushtucker Trials since arriving in the Jungle, with his high scores receiving positive feedback from the group.

However Darren believes Matt “did himself no favours” following his behaviour around the camp.

Despite being one of the most controversial campmates in the jungle, the politician is still a favourite among fans and is clearly loving the spotlight.

As it edges closer to the half way mark of the series, Matt still has the opportunity to win his fellow campmates over.

According to bookies, Owen Warner has leapfrogged Mike Tindall and is now second-favourite to win I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, according to Ladbrokes.

The Hollyoaks star is just 5/2 in the betting to be crowned King of the Jungle, while Tindall’s odds have drifted to 5/1, as Jill Scott continues to lead the way at 6/5.

Elsewhere, Matt Hancock (8/1) is the only other name priced shorter than 20/1 as things stand, with Charlene White being the show’s rank outsider at 100/1.

I’m A Celebrity continues tonight on ITV at 9pm
