Normal People's Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones reunite 3ft apart at TV Baftas

Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones had everyone hot under the collar with their sex scenes in Normal People.

But there was no chance of them getting close as they reunited at the Bafta Television Awards.

Paul, 24, and Daisy, 22, proved they were staying a metre apart, as per social distancing rules, as they held up a measuring tape between them at the awards pre-show in London.

Daisy, who played Marianne in the hit BBC Three show, got a fit of the giggles as she posed a metre away from her on-screen boyfriend, while Paul also found the situation pretty funny.

Despite their first TV Baftas red carpet being scrapped due to the pandemic, the stars scrubbed up well for the event, with Paul, who played Connell on Normal People, wearing a white t-shirt and a suit.

Sadly, no silver chain was to be seen.

Meanwhile, Daisy opted for full glamour, in a slinky black dress with an embellished bodice, and while the typical red carpet was shelved, she still posed up a storm for the cameras.

A woman after our own hearts.

Paul and Daisy haven’t been able to spend much time together IRL since the success of Normal People due to the pandemic, but will tonight present one of the awards in studio with TV Baftas host Richard Ayoade.

They aren’t actually up for any awards, though – Normal People wasn’t aired in time – but will no doubt still be buzzing over the four Emmys nominations the show picked up this week, including an outstanding lead actor nod for Mescal.

Paul and Daisy will be joined in studio by Greg Davies, Stacey Dooley, Himesh Patel and Nina Sosanya, while Chris O’Dowd, David Tennant, Michael Sheen and The Muppets’ Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy are among those presenting via video link.

While the show will be aired in a different format this year, plenty of celebs put on the ritz at the TV Centre in London.

Emily Atack wore a mint green shorts suit – good for her predicting it would be the hottest day of the year, while Nina Toussaint looked effortlessly chic in a strapless patterned dress.

Jessica Hynes brought the glam too, in a floor-length black stain gown with a ruched pink strapless neckline.

Stacey Dooley, who is presenting an award, showed up to the BBC in a vintage strapless dress with a puffball hem, showcasing her quirky style.

Aisling Bea, who has already been named this year’s breakthrough talent recipient, wore a slinky black and white polka dot dress to the event, paired with straight hair.

And Richard Ayoade wore a grey suit, paired with a red tie, as he prepared to host the Baftas with a twist.

Drama Chernobyl has racked up 14 nominations in total for tonight’s awards, with Netflix series The Crown getting seven nods.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag notched six nominations – tied with BBC Two’s Giri/Haji, while His Dark Materials and The Virtues got five nods, and Killing Eve and Top Boy received four nominations.

The Bafta Television Awards air tonight on BBC One at 7pm.
