Rachel Riley in subtle swipe at Anne Robinson as she drinks a toast to Countdown

Countdown's Rachel Riley has shared her excitement over the "next chapter" in the show's history following the exit of Anne Robinson.

The stunning presenter and maths whiz posted a photo on her Instagram as she posed in a blue plunging dress with pink flowers as she opted for a subtle makeup look.

She pinned her hair back and finished the look with a swipe of lippy as she donned a casual exterior as she held up a glass of wine to the camera.

As she shared the snap she captioned the photo: "Drinking a toast to the next chapter in Countdown's history… I think you're going to like it."

She hit 14,000 likes as she was inundated with love, but others were questioning her post as fans believed she might've been happy that Anne was leaving.

One person wrote: "In other words, but won't say the words, thank God Anne is leaving [laughing emoji]."

Another said: "Are you happy cause you got rid of Anne? [laughing emoji]."

A third person wrote: "Are you toasting the fact that Anne has finally left??"

Meanwhile, others were taking guesses at who the new presenter of Countdown could be, with a mix of fans hoping for Rachel to take on the job herself, Carol Vorderman returning to the show and Pointless star Richard Osman joining the team.

Carol has said that it "would be an honour" to return to Countdown but she added: "I want to wish whoever is the lucky human to be the new host all the love and 9 letter words in the world."

Anne's decision to leave Countdown was revealed earlier this week as she said that she enjoyed hosting the "wonderful show" and stayed longer than she intended.

She said in her statement: "I hope too I've encouraged TV bosses to realise that not all women at the wrong end of their 70s are in care homes playing bingo and watching conjuring tricks.

"In fact the genius of Countdown is that it's a brilliant way to keep the brain exercised. I run 5km most days of the week.

"And I can now do an anagram at twice the speed I could this time last year.

"But I have grandchildren, a large garden and a home in New York, all deserving more of my attention."

Fans are eagerly awaiting the announcement of who the new host is, which is yet to be revealed.
