'Sex and the City': Will the Revival Have the Same Plot as the Third Movie Script?

Sex and the City is officially being revived. After weeks of rumors, multiple outlets confirmed on Jan. 10 that the revival received the green light and is in the works at HBO Max. It’s great news for fans and followers of the beloved romantic comedy-drama series. But at the same time, there are plenty of questions about the show and what it’ll look like.

So far, plot details are limited. But we can’t help but wonder: Will the Sex and the City revival feature the plot from the third movie script? Find everything we know, below.

‘Sex and the City’ has been off the air for years

The original series debuted in 1998 and ran for six seasons until 2004, ending with Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and John “Mr. Big” Preston (Chris Noth) getting back together following her breakup with Russian artist Aleksandr Petrovsky (Mikhail Baryshnikov).

About four years after the finale, the actors reunited for a movie that spawned a sequel in 2010. Both projects were commercial successes, but they paled in comparison to the original series.

Still, there were still plenty of talks about a follow-up over the following years. Deadline reported in December 2020 that a limited series was being discussed at HBO Max before confirming days later that the actors had signed on to the project.

The ‘Sex and the City’ revival is on the way

Titled And Just Like That…, the series will focus on Bradshaw and her friends Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) “as they navigate love and friendship in their 50s,” according to Variety.

“I grew up with these characters, and I can’t wait to see how their story has evolved in this new chapter, with the honesty, poignancy, humor and the beloved city that has always defined them,” Sarah Aubrey, who oversees original content at HBO Max, said in a statement shared with the outlet.

Variety reports that the revival will include 10 episodes and is expected to begin shooting in the spring of 2020.

Will the ‘Sex and the City’ revival include the plot from the third movie script?

As you might remember, there were previously reports that Big was supposed to die in the third film, which was scrapped amid Kim Cattrall’s refusal to reprise her role as Samantha.

“People close to Kim believe that the script for the movie didn’t have a lot to offer the character of Samantha,” journalist James Andrew Miller said in a 2018 appearance on the Cadence13 podcast Origins.

“They pointed a fact that it calls for Mr. Big to die of a heart attack in the shower relatively early on in the film, making the remainder of the film more about how Carrie recovers from Big’s death than about the relationship between the four women,” Miller added.

However, Noth rejected those claims, telling The Sun (via Page Six): “He wasn’t going to die. There’s no way he was dying. That was all a lie.”

As news of the revival spread, many fans turned to Parker, who also serves as executive producer, for answers about Big’s fate. When one person asked on Instagram whether he would appear in the revival, she coyly responded (via Us Weekly), “Wait and see.”

With that, it’s hard to say what the show has planned. We guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
