Shaun Ryder talks about Im A Celebrity… South Africa ordeal

Has life finally caught up with Shaun Ryder, the hedonistic lead singer of the Happy Mondays? Emerging from the latest I’m a Celebrity… ordeal in South Africa, the Manchester frontman catalogued a series of mental and physical challenges that caused him problems during the filming of the show.

These included the moment he woke up the entire camp when his false hip slipped from its socket.

Ryder, a 2010 runner-up, said: “When I went into the last show at 48 I was in reasonable condition. I didn’t really have an overactive thyroid which makes you fat. I didn’t have full-body alopecia. I didn’t have a false hip and another that needed to be replaced.

“So yeah, a lot of change by the time I was 60 for this show. You know, I thought mentally I was still the same. Physically, I wasn’t.

“I was also down on my testosterone because I kept forgetting to put my special gel on. So I went into full menopause,” he said.

His many conditions didn’t affect the zeal with which he approached the show – and he didn’t embark on any training regime either. “It had only been 12 years so I thought I would be mentally OK but I proved myself wrong.”

After two days, the entire camp heard his hip pop out. “It just came out, and it woke up everybody. I thought, ‘Am I going to be rushed to hospital to get this thing back?’ No way. So as soon as it came out, I pushed it back in myself!” Medics examined him but all was well.

He is joined in the South African savannah by boxing champion Amir Khan, Diversity dancer and DJ Jordan Banjo, former Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan, TV presenter Carol Vorderman, Olympic athlete Fatima Whitbread, former royal butler Paul Burrell, ex-supermodel Janice Dickinson and ex-England cricketer Phil Tufnell.

The only former winner in the line-up, Tufnell, who struck up a “bromance” with Ryder, admitted the show was a tough experience.

“These challenges are pretty tough, so the body does ache a little bit. But it was great fun.”

The winner will be crowned the first I’m a Celebrity Legend.
