The BBC One drama has been thrilling viewers since 1996, with iconic TV star Emilia Fox still at the helm after joining in series eight. Her character Dr Nikki Alexander has been teasing Silent Witness fans with a will-they-won’t-they romance with forensic scientist Jack Hodgson (David Caves). However, she may have put an end to their potential relationship in the first part of the season 24 finale.

Fans are convinced iconic crime drama Silent Witness has run its course after an infuriating twist in the latest episode.

The 24th instalment of the show will be coming to an end on Tuesday evening, following the jaw-dropping first half of the season finale on Monday.

Alongside the usual crime-solving drama, viewers have been enthralled by the possibility of romance blossoming between Nikki and Jack.

Unfortunately, her actions in the latest episode, Matters of Life and Death – Part 1, may have ruined any chance of the pair finally getting together.

At the end of part one, Nikki attends a party and strikes up a conversation with a student, Ollie (Jack Bandeira), who has been working the same case.

Many fans were surprised when the pair ended up spending the night together.

Her meeting with Ollie seems to have crushed any hopes of Nikki finally getting together with Jack before the end of the current season.

In fact, a number of viewers took to social media to call out her questionable actions following the latest twist.

One viewer named Emma fumed: “Nikki Alexander would NEVER sleep with a student, what is this mess?”

And Rhiannon tweeted: “Tell me they didn’t just ruin 17 years of a character in ten minutes, someone tell me that please.”

In addition to the Nikki and Jack curveball, plenty of viewers also took issue with the age gap and power imbalance between the pathologist and student.

Plus, Nikki is still technically dating her suave American boyfriend Matt Garcia (Michael Landes).

Matt has yet to make an appearance in the current season, but fans were still infuriated by Nikki’s betrayal.

Much of the audience naturally felt betrayed by her decisions after watching her develop over the last 17 years of the show.

Another fan named Helen tweeted: “What I do find REALLY confusing is why Jack and Nikki have slept with other people when they love each other?

“Why have Nikki cheat on Matt? Why can’t she just end things with Matt?”

While Chlo posted: “I’m sorry but what is with the writing this season.

“They have completely ruined these characters and for what? Do better.”

Will Dr Nikki confess all to Jack and Matt or keep her tryst with Ollie a secret?

Silent Witness season 24 concludes Tuesday, October 5 on BBC One.
