Each couple did three dances during the final in a bid to try and win the coveted Glitterball Trophy.

After winning, Bill said: "It feels surreal, extraordinary and wonderful.

"I never thought we would get this far. I never thought we'd get to the final.

"I've had the most extraordinary teacher and the most extraordinary dancer.

"Someone who has believed in me right from the beginning. She found something in me and turned me into this – into a dancer. Thank you Oti."

It is the second year in a row that Oti has won, with her winning last year with former Emmerdale star Kelvin Fletcher.

She got emotional while listening to Bill praise her.

She said: "I think you are amazing, remarkable Bill Bailey. You put your heart into everything and your soul into everything.

"You are in your own world, but I love your world and always want to be a part of you.

"Thank you for being a friend and father figure to me, a brother… and for this.”

Hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman wowed viewers with their outfits for the final, with Tess opting for a sequin gown and Claudia in a dramatic black dress with metallic detailing.

GMB host Ranvir Singh narrowly missed out on a spot in the final after being voted out with her partner Giovanni Pernice last week.

Hours before the final, Bill Bailey revealed that his "legs stopped working" while in rehearsals.

The comedian, who has garnered support from his fellow competitors, said he was balancing on one knee when he fell onto his side as he was rehearsing with dance partner Oti Mabuse.

Writing in his Strictly Come Dancing column for The Telegraph, the 55 year old said: "The long day's training must have taken it out of me, and the result was, as I started to rise, stylishly, not domestically, my legs stopped working.

"I froze in mid-air, and slowly toppled over onto one side," he explained.

"It looked like I'd been hit by a tranquiliser dart, in order to be put on a flatbed truck and moved to a different part of the game reserve," Bill joked.
