'The Bachelorette': Joe and Michelle Young Already Have History

Michelle Young is well on her way to finding love on The Bachelorette. There were a number of men who seemed to catch the bachelorette’s eye, but one in particular that she was already familiar with. When Joe Coleman made his entrance, Michelle recognized him almost immediately. At first, she wasn’t 100% clear on where she knew him from, but as the episode went on, more details about their relationship were revealed.

How did Michelle and Joe meet before ‘The Bachelorette’?

Joe was the last man to make an entrance last night but he definitely made a lasting impression. As soon as he walked up to Michelle, she told him he looked really familiar. Once she realized that he was also from Minnesota, things clicked for her.

“Have I met you before? Have I slid into your DMs? Is your last name Coleman?” she asked.

“That’s me,” Joe confirmed.

Later, Michelle explained to hosts Tayshia Adams and Kaitlyn Bristowe how she knew Joe.

“We messaged back and forth about basketball briefly, and then he ghosted me,” she said. But despite his ghosting, she was still “kind of interested” in getting to know him.

Why did Joe ghost Michelle?

Of course, Michelle had to find out what had happened with Joe that made him not want to continue speaking to her in real life, yet come on The Bachelorette to pursue her on tv.

“I was surprised to get a few responses back and then, you know, someone forgot to hit send,” she said to him.

Joe then revealed that he had been going through a tough time during the period that they exchanged messages.

“In that situation and that time, I had a lot going on,” he said. “I had a property in George Floyd Square, like three blocks away, and I had a lot of shootings, a lot of murders, a lot of things going on where at the time, it just caused a lot of anxiety. I didn’t feel like I was in a place to open up to somebody and I didn’t know how to express those feelings with you.”

Michelle was understanding but still hesitant to move forward.

“You didn’t have to be ready for a relationship, you just had to communicate that you’re not in a good place right now. That’s it,” she said. “Because for me, respect is a huge thing and my hesitance here tonight is that how do I know you’re not going to shut down again?”

Joe promised that that wouldn’t happen as he had been working through his emotions and communication skills in therapy.

“I truly came for you,” he said.

Did Joe get a rose on ‘The Bachelorette’?

Despite the touching conversation between Michelle and Joe, she was still hesitant to invest in him. Before handing out the last rose, Michelle took a break to gather her thoughts and decide what she wanted to do. In the end, she chose to give Joe a rose.

The Bachelorette airs on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
