'The Handmaid's Tale': Will June's Plan Succeed In The Finale?

The season finale of The Handmaid’s Tale is almost here. The third season of the show has divided critics and fans, and it took several episodes for the show to find momentum. In the past two episodes alone, June killed a commander, Serena betrayed Fred, and June let Eleanor Lawrence die. There are lots of fractured story lines hanging in the balance, and The Handmaid’s Tale only has an hour-long episode left to resolve them. June is ready to put her plan of rescuing 52 children into action, but will it be successful?

The third season of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ will end on a cliffhanger

The first season of The Handmaid’s Tale ended with June boarding a black van. The second season ended with June deciding not to escape to Canada and running back to Gilead. Both times, viewers were unsure of her fate. Just like the two seasons before it, the third season of The Handmaid’s Tale will end on a cliffhanger.

“I hope you’ll feel shocked at what we accomplish and where we leave our key characters,” said executive producer Warren Littlefield. “I think it’s quite a cliffhanger that we’ll leave you with.”

It’s clear the showrunners of The Handmaid’s Tale want to keep the show running as long as possible. Because of that, they have to make the show enticing enough for viewers to keep watching. Ending on a cliffhanger is a surefire way to intrigue viewers to watch the premiere of the next season.

In the premiere of the third season, viewers watched Emily cross Canada’s border with June’s daughter. The preview for the next episode shows June orchestrating the children’s escape. If the season is expected to end on a cliffhanger, the perfect one would be to leave the fate of the children unknown. Maybe it will end with the children boarding the plane or the plane taking off, but viewers will have to wait until the fourth season to know if the plane makes it to Canada.

What happens to June if her plan succeeds?

The third season of The Handmaid’s Tale is filled with a lot of hope compared to previous seasons. There are less violent scenes and more cathartic moments of characters fighting back against their oppressors. With the shift in tone, the plane of children arriving in Canada would be a fitting ending.

June told Commander Lawrence she did not plan to leave Gilead without her daughter, Hannah. This means that whether her plan works or not, she is staying in Gilead. If her plan fails, there is no doubt she would be captured along with everyone else involved. If it succeeds, she will be left in Gilead as a handmaid without a commander.

There is a chance the cliffhanger will mirror past seasons with June’s fate. Will she be captured? Or will she go on the run? Will she become more active in the resistance?

Where is Nick? And Emily? And Hannah?

Outside of June’s plan, there are many questions the finale needs to answer for viewers. Nick did not make an appearance in the most recent episode. If he does not show up in the finale his fate is left unknown. Fans will have to wait a whole year to find out more about his role in the creation of Gilead. Nick’s love story with June was a main plot point in the first two seasons, and it took a backseat in the third season. Viewers will have to wait for the next season to know where the two characters stand with each other.

While Moira and Luke were in the previous episode, Emily has not been seen for several episodes. Her last scene showed her in a jail cell with Moira, and viewers can assume the two were released together. Did Emily reconcile with her wife? Will she be sent back to Gilead for attempting to kill Aunt Lydia? Is she adjusted to her life as a refugee? If Emily is not in the finale, these questions will be left unanswered.

June will not leave Gilead until she finds Hannah. The only problem is she has no idea where Hannah is because her adoptive family moved. All of June’s allies plan to leave on the plane to Canada. If June does not learn where Hannah is before then, it will be difficult for her to track down Hannah’s location as an on-the-run handmaid.

There is no way to know for sure if June’s plan will succeed in The Handmaid’s Tale finale. Knowing the show’s history, fans should prepare themselves for a cliffhanger ending and know they might not have their questions answered until the fourth season.
