The One Reason Chris Evans Can't Return as Captain America to the MCU

Tony Stark’s denoument in Avengers: Endgame left fans crying into their popcorn, as they watched the formerly egotistical an arrogant billionaire fully transform into the savior he always was. While watching Stark slip from our grasp proved difficult, many MCU enthusiasts understood the choice and accepted the finality of his death. However, Captain America’s conclusion was a little bit different; and, as a result, fans wonder if Chris Evans’ Old cap, or young Cap (via some infinity stone magic), could ever return to the family of heroes.

For his final moment in Endgame, Chris Evans took on a little bit of makeup and prosthetics, transitioning into the wise old owl type of character whom the MCU never really had … even if for a brief moment.

Chris Evans’ Captain America cannot return to the MCU because it would render ‘Endgame’ moot and damage the character’s legacy

Rumors have been surfacing that Chris Evans will cameo in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. While such rumors are appealing, it’s time we consider putting these pipedreams to rest. Endgame writers recently explained why Captain America cannot return, stating:

Christopher Markus: I also don’t want to. I love writing for Cap, I love Evans. But I really feel, much like Tony, we got them to a place where they don’t need to do it anymore. I’d hate to gin up something hokey to get them back.

Stephen McFeely: I do worry that if they do stuff like that, it’ll ding Endgame in the rearview mirror. This is such an important and such an interesting moment in movies, because a very successful studio just put their tools down

In the end, bringing back Chris Evans as Captain America would feel cheap. Endgame was designed to bid Tony Stark and Captain America farewell; the movie was their final bow, and it should live down in history as such.

Bringing back Captain America would smudge the legacy that his character currently retains, for it would feel “hokey” no matter how the writers swing it, as they explained above. While there may be multiple narrative possibilities for Evans as Old Cap when it comes to Disney+ or future Marvel films, such a character does not need to be stripped of the glorius farewell he has received.

So, while you can continue to prophecize all the ways the OG Captain America could return, as doing such is quite fun (and fills that little empty spot in our hearts), don’t get your hopes up.
