'The White Lotus': Will the Second Season Also Feature a Murder?

The freshman season of The White Lotus opens at the end. After a vacation in paradise, someone is dead. This knowledge looms darkly over the rest of the series, cranking up the tension in the already-fraught relationship dynamics between characters. Ahead of the season 1 finale, HBO announced the show’s renewal for a second season. Though creator Mike White will write the series again, significant changes are coming in season 2.

HBO renewed the successful series

In August 2021, the streaming service announced it was renewing the satirical limited series for a second season. The first season, which began in July 2021, was acclaimed for its sharp writing and pitch-perfect cast.

The cast features Murray Bartlett and Natasha Rothwell as harried hotel employees and Connie Britton, Steve Zahn, Sydney Sweeney, Fred Hechinger, Brittany O’Grady, Jennifer Coolidge, Alexandra Daddario, and Jack Lacy as guests at the resort. As the series progresses, the characters’ storylines overlap and entwine, bringing darkness to the idyllic location.

According to HBO, the first season of The White Lotus was the No. 1 ranking series on HBO Max. It also steadily grew its premiere and digital audience leading up to the finale.

Francesca Orsi, the Executive Vice President of HBO Programming, said of the show’s renewal: “Mike has once again delivered a quintessential HBO show, and it’s the talk of the town. We were thrilled to hear where he wanted to go next, after closing this epic chapter in Hawaii, and can’t wait to keep following him wherever he takes us.”

Mike White announces changes for ‘The White Lotus’ Season 2

The show’s second season will differ greatly from the first. In an interview with TVLine, White revealed the show will depart from Hawaii and settle at a different White Lotus property.

“It would have to be a different hotel, like, say, The White Lotus: San Tropez or something,” he explained.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, he teased the possibility of setting the new season in France or Japan.

The second season will also see big changes to the cast. “I don’t think you can credibly have [all the Season 1 guests] on the same vacation again,” White said. “But maybe it could be a Marvel universe type thing, where some of them would come back.”

White has disclosed little of the season 2 premise and whether the upcoming season will also be a murder mystery. He has some ideas, however. “I think there’s another season in me that kind of has a different way into this that I think would be cool if they’d let me do this,” he told The New Yorker.

Though not revealing much, the statement hints that season 2 may use a different premise to examine wealth and whiteness. As White noted about the cast, it may be difficult to realistically set another murder at a White Lotus hotel.

How long do fans have to wait for ‘The White Lotus’ Season 2?

Fans looking forward to arriving at the next paradisical resort with a new group of guests may have to wait a while. HBO hasn’t yet announced a release date for the sophomore season of ‘The White Lotus.’ As the first season concluded in Aug. 2021, the show will likely not come until 2022. Until then, the entire first season is available to stream on HBO Max.
