Bjorn Ironside (played by Alexander Ludwig) met his shocking death at the hands of his half-brother Ivar the Boneless (played by Alex Høgh Andersen) in the season six finale of Vikings. Even after their lifelong feud throughout the series, fans of the History hit believe that Ivar truly wanted Bjorn to survive his injuries.

The shocking end of season 6 started when Ivar the Boneless lost the privilege of having a leadership role to his half brother Bjorn Ironside.

This came after he lost the second battle for the kingdom of Kattegat to King Herald and Ivar (Peter Franzén).

After his defeat, he fled to The Rus and met with Prince Oleg of Novgorod (Danila Kozlovsky) and the pair came up with a plan to take over Scandinavia.

The brothers have had feuds over power in the series, one was seen in an epic battle.

After Bjor won the battle of Kattegat and became king, Ivar became jealous and took revenge.

Bjor confronted him and called him out for being evil, Ivar shot an arrow at his half-brother.

Luckily Bjor was able to avoid it and threw the arrow to the ground as he walked away.

In a rage of jealousy and revenge, Bjorn met his demise at the hands of Ivar.

After an intense conversation, Ivar stabbed Bjorn with his sword and left him for dead during a battle led by the people of Rus.

In the next episode, it was revealed that he had initially survived but later died after facing his enemies one last time.

Despite the long feud and anger against each other fans seem to believe Ivar secretly wanted Bjorn to survive the stabbing.

One Reddit user posted: “I’ve noticed from the look in Ivar’s eyes that he feels some kind of love towards Bjorn.

“I noticed this when Ivar fired an arrow at Bjorn when he was trying to take Kattegat back from Ivar.

“Ivar looked at Bjorn with some kind of regret which makes you wonder what is going through Ivar’s head.

“I think Ivar’s facial expressions tell their own story and from my pov it seems like he wishes there was no conflict between their mothers and that things could have been very different between them.”

In the series, Ivar’s mother Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) and Bjorn’s mother Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) despised each other.

Their hatred began after the men’s father Ragnar Lodbrok (Travis Fimmel) cheated on Lagertha with Aslaug.
The pair even took the opportunity to try and murder the other in season four.

Another fan agreed: “Yes I noticed that too I think every time he is in Bjorn’s presence he has that look that he’d give Ragnar. If they had no conflict Bjorn probably would have taken Ragnar’s place in Ivar’s heart.”

However, another disagreed and said: “I’m gonna lean no, Bjorn the child was mature and carried himself according to the norms, versus Ivar the child who hatcheted a fellow Viking child to death.

“That, to me, indicates two opposing wires (character, allegiance) that were bound to conflict from Day One, regardless of birth and certainly because blood relation only went so far in those days (or as has been ever since). I’m thinking it was more about self-pity, if not jealousy, on Ivar’s part.”
