Vikings has just 10 more episodes to go until the epic historical drama series comes to an end for good. Part one of the final season saw brothers Bjorn Ironside (played by Alexander Ludwig) and Ivar the Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen) once again go head to head for control of Kattegat. Is Bjorn Ironside really still alive? Express.co.uk has everything you need to know.

Is Bjorn Ironside really alive?

In the midseason finale of Vikings season six, Bjorn Ironside and his brother, Ivar the Boneless came face to face in battle.

Ivar appeared to stab his brother on the beaches of Kattegat, leaving him for dead.

Ever since the fatal scene, fans have been questioning whether Bjorn really was stabbed by Ivar, or if the scene was part of one of the brother’s imaginations.

After the midseason finale aired, show creator Michael Hirst confirmed Bjorn and his enemy-turned-ally King Harald of Norway (Peter Franzén) had been “very badly wounded”

Speaking to TV Guide in February 2019, Hirst said: “He’s not dead, is he? He’s very, very badly wounded.

“I can’t tell you too much but what I can tell you is the [midseason premiere] is an extraordinary episode and a number of things that you thought were true at the end of [midseason finale] proved not to be quite true.”

He also teased fans would find out what happened to Bjorn and Harald in episode 11 of the final series.

During the Vikings Comic-Con at Home panel in July 2020, a clip from the final 10 episodes revealed Bjorn’s fate.

In the clip, Bjorn Ironside appears to be alive, leaving Ivar looking haunted and speechless.

The exclusive clip from the new series begins with Prince Oleg (Danila Kozlovsky) receiving Holy Communion after the first battle.

Ivar and Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) can be seen in the background, preparing for battle.

As they and the Rus army wait, a figure on a horse crosses the field towards them.

In what appears to be an unexpected encounter, particularly for Ivar, an injured Bjorn Ironside is travelling towards the vast Rus army on a white horse.

Speaking on the panel, Hirst once again confirmed Bjorn was “seriously injured”.

He said: “I think you can safely say that Bjorn is very seriously injured.”

Hirst also revealed King Harald is “very seriously injured.”

He added: “That’s one of the downsides to being in a battle, I think. This can happen too, but all will be revealed.”

Judging by Hirst’s comments, Bjorn’s arrival on the horse appears to be a real event and not a figment of Ivar’s imagination.

If Bjorn is alive but injured, it seems to confirm he was actually stabbed by Ivar at the battle of Kattegat.

Bjorn was given the nickname “Ironside” after other Vikings believed he could never die in battle and he appears to be living up to his name.

However, as he approaches Oleg’s army, he looked exhausted and unstable on his horse.

Speaking to TV Guide after the midseason finale, Ludwig who plays Bjorn teased: “Nobody would be expecting that [Bjorn to be stabbed], which is why I think it’s a genius move.

“It’s something that I had spoken to [creator Michael Hirst] about in a lot of ways, and I said that I wanted Bjorn to go at the hands of somebody like Ivar.”

Ludwig continued: “He doesn’t go without a fight. And whether or not he is still alive, you will see a version of Bjorn is some way, shape, or form.”

Fans will have to wait until part two airs later this year to find out if Bjorn is really alive.
