Virgin River dropped a trailer for season three earlier this month teasing what is to come for the beloved Netflix characters. Since then, fans have been speculating as to Vernon ‘Doc’ Mullins’ (played by Tim Matheson) fate after he is seen telling Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) his health is declining. With a death mentioned, viewers have put two and two together and think Doc will die.

Netflix has captioned the two-minute trailer with: “Mel Monroe and her loved ones are back and facing all sorts of troubles: death, a fire, custody arguments, breakups and more.”

During the clip, Mel is seen sitting down with Doc, she tentatively asks him: “You’re going blind?” and he replies: “In a word, maybe.”

As for whose death it is going to be, some fans think season three would be Docs last.

Taking to Reddit, one posted: “I have wondered if the funeral will be Doc’s.

“Matheson has directed 4 episodes, and he might want to direct more. I hope the character won’t be killed off and that he can act and direct.”

Someone replied: “Don’t think so. He’s a main character, he’ll be fine. More so, this is definitely not their last season, if it was I’d be worried, but that’s not the case.”

Others, however, suggested the funeral would be for Lilly Anderson (Lynda Boyd).

Netflix announced Lilly’s daughter Tara Anderson (Stacey Farber) is arriving – is this because her mother has been killed and she needs to look after her baby sister?

My only 99.99% prediction is that the funeral that is mentioned on the description for the season is Lily’s. Jack and Mel are totally buying that property,” a fan commented on the platform.

I agree about the funeral, they are bringing Lily’s daughter Tara as a new character so it would make sense. Mel’s dreams of a farmhouse with kids may become true at some point!” Another thought.

Meanwhile, one addressed all the hints in the trailer: “Oooo good theory on them buying that property! I agree with you it will be Lily who dies, sadly.

“I think the fire they have teased will be a forest fire as happens in the book, where a main character will be in minor peril but it won’t be Jack – maybe Preacher or Mike. Brady will save the day.

“I don’t think Doc will die but whatever he has will seriously slow him down and prevent him from working, meaning Mel will have to take over.

“Divorce I think will be Brie or Joey. I think Joey’s character is supposed to be in it a bit more this year,” they continued.

“I have absolutely no idea what will happen with Charmaine and twins – maybe they moved to Portland or Charmaine runs away? I do not think they will kill her character off. It’s too dark!”

While there is lots of drama going on in season there of Virgin River, one thing that one be featured is the coronavirus pandemic.

Lead actress Alexandra told Entertainment Tonight: “Not a lot of people are going to wanna watch a show about COVID having just gone through it, having COVID fatigue.

“In Virgin River, you want to escape your world and that’s what’s beautiful about the show [and] this beautiful small town.”

As for whether the show will continue past season three, since the shows is based on the novels by Robin Carr, more episodes could be on their way sometime in the future.

Virgin Rivers season one and two are available to watch on Netflix now and season three drops July 3.
