When They See Us: Who plays Korey Wise’s girlfriend? Who is Storm Reid?

When They See Us is the incredible mini-series from A Wrinkle in Time and Selma director Ava DuVernay. The series dramatises the true story of the Central Park Five case, where five teenagers – Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Korey Wise and Raymond Santana – were wrongfully convicted of a crime they did not commit. Euphoria actress Storm Reid has a small but hugely significant role in episode four of When They See Us.

Who plays Korey Wise’s girlfriend? Who is Storm Reid?

Storm Reid is an up-and-coming American actress from Atlanta.

She is 15-years-old and has already starred in an Oscar-winning film and numerous American TV shows.

In When They See Us, Storm plays the role of Lisa.

Prior to When They See Us, Reid is perhaps best known for playing Meg Murry in DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time.

In a Wrinkle in Time, she starred alongside huge stars such as Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling.

Currently, Reid is starring in the HBO series Euphoria as Gia Bennett, alongside Zendaya.

Reid also starred in Steve McQueen’s Oscar-winning film 12 Years a Slave as Emily and in the hugely successful film Sleight as Tina.

Other film credits include A Happening of Monumental Proportions, Santa’s Boot Camp, The Summoning and An American Girl: Lea to the Rescue.

Reid has also appeared in small TV roles including Chicago PD, NCIS Los Angeles and Nicky, Ricky, Dicky and Dawn.

Who is Lisa in When They See Us?

Lisa is the friend and love interest of Korey Wise in When They See Us.

Korey had always maintained that he did go to the park but did not participate in any violence. He also said he spent most of the evening at Lisa’s house.

Although Lisa only appears in the opening first few minutes of episode one and in Korey’s flashbacks in episode four, her character allows viewers to see the Central Park Five member as a normal 16-year-old boy.

In the flashbacks, Korey replays the moment in his head when he made the fateful decision to leave his girlfriend and head into the park.

Instead, Korey changes the version of events so, in his memory, he never left her.

Heartbreaking scenes show Lisa and Korey having their first kiss and spending time at Coney Island.

Korey went on to spend 12 years in adult prison for a crime he did not commit.

He was exonerated in 2002 alongside Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, and Raymond Santana after the real attacker, Matias Reyes, confessed to the rape and attack of the Central Park jogger.

Speaking to Teen Vogue, Reid said: “Ms Ava gifted me a character that really humanized the boys because all people knew them as — especially then — criminals or accused criminals.

“And while some people knew they didn’t commit the crime, some people will still just see them as brown and black boys who did something wrong.”

She added: “We live in a system, and in a world, where we’re penalized for being African-American. We’re penalized for being part of a marginalized group.

“So of course [Ava] wants to cover the case, but what she really succeeds at is helping people get to know the boys before this happened to them.”

The series comes to an end with a heart-warming reference to Lisa and Korey’s childhood, as Korey goes to buy lunch in the Kentucky Fried Chicken diner the teenagers went on their first date.

When They See Us is streaming on Netflix now.
