Where is Jane Beale in EastEnders and is Laurie Brett returning for Bobby Beale?

It’s all kicking off in EastEnders following the return of Bobby Beale to Albert Square as the character is released from prison.

Bobby – who has been behind bars since confessing to the unlawful killing of his sister Lucy – as well as brutally attacking his stepmother Jane (Laurie Brett) with a hockey stick – showed up on Thursday night, with actor Clay Milner Russell taking over as the fifth actor to play him.

With Bobby back in Walford, it’s raised questions over whether we might see the return of Jane, who was last seen departing Walford in the back of a taxi after being ordered to leave by a vengeful Max Branning (Jake Wood).

So just where is Jane – and could she come back to the Square in the wake of Bobby’s return?

Here’s what you need to know…

Where is Jane Beale in EastEnders?

Jane’s current whereabouts are unclear, although she was last seen in Albert Square in 2017.

Having been left in a wheelchair after Bobby’s devastating assault on her, Jane once again had a brush with death as Max attempted to get his revenge on her and Ian over his being wrongly convicted of Lucy’s murder.

She ended up trapped in Beales restaurant as Ian’s son Steven (Aaron Sidwell) set fire to the building after being ordered by Max to kill her – although Steven ultimately died and Jane survived the attempt on her life.

In the end though she left after Max ordered her to go, threatening Bobby if she didn’t do as he said.

Cue Jane making the customary exit from Walford in the back of a taxi – although it was later revealed she had told Tanya Branning (Jo Joyner) everything about the revenge plot – and the truth soon came out about what Max had done.

Is Laurie Brett returning to EastEnders?

At the moment there’s been no suggestion that Laurie might bring Jane back to Walford at some point – not even now that Bobby’s back.

However she did spark a bit of speculation last year during a conversation on Twitter with Tamzin Outhwaite, who plays Mel Owen.

‘My year off is almost over, I haven’t regretted it for a minute, as your wise words said,’ she told her. ‘It’s been amazing to just be mum and get off the hamster wheel.’

When Tamzin asked her if she would now be returning to Walford, she said: ‘Ha ha!! I’m looking to do some other bits and pieces…and take some courses on something I’ve always been interested in…but you never know at some point.’

Could this mean we will get to catch up with Jane at some point in the future? We’ll just have to wait and see.

EastEnders airs weeknights on BBC One on Mondays and Fridays at 8pm and on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7.30pm.
