The Pursuit of Love is an upcoming romance drama series that is due to air on BBC One on May 9. The series stars Lily James as Linda Radlett, whose personal life is explored in great detail. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about where the series is filmed and set.

Where is The Pursuit of Love set?

The miniseries is a small screen adaptation of the 1945 Nancy Mitford novel of the same name.

The original book forms part of a trilogy, which follows the lives of an upper-class family after the First World War.

Although the book tells the story of Linda Radlett, it is narrated by her cousin –  Fanny Logan (Emily Beecham), who is also Linda’s best friend.

Viewers will learn of the complications in Linda’s many relationships as she attempts to navigate romance.

She goes through various partners, realising the terrible mistakes she has made along the way.

Actress James revealed more about what fans can expect from the TV adaptation of this tragic novel.

She said: “It’s a beautiful story about family, friendship and about pursuing love whatever form that takes for each person.

“It’s a wonderful celebration of the Mitford sisters. Nancy wrote this book about her life, her sisters and how they grew up. I think it’s fascinating and they were brilliant.

“It’s funny, clever but at the core of it there’s a question of what really makes us happy. It is love? It’s bonkers, brilliant and beautiful.”

James said she fell in love with Linda’s personality when she read the book.

Filming had initially started in the spring of 2020, but had to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Luckily the cast and crew were able to resume filming in July of that year, and production took place across Bristol, Bath and Somerset.

The UK-based series has been written and directed by Emily Mortimer, and she spoke about filming during the coronavirus pandemic.

She said: “It’s had its pros and cons. It’s been quite bonding. Initially, there was something exciting about being with a lot of people after not being with anyone for months on end.

“At first, it was freaky to be in rooms with people but it was a great feeling to be back at work, thinking about something other than the pandemic. I felt genuinely blessed to have a job.

“There is something about this story being set between the wars, at a time when life was very fragile and everyone was living like there was no tomorrow.

“Our generation hasn’t had that experience of life in such an intense way. I hope this cheers people up. It is about painful subjects but there’s an energy to it.”

Actress James also shared her favourite moments from filming, which included the scenes with the whole Radlett family.

She also enjoyed shooting the opening of the series, where Linda is heavily pregnant. She said: “I had a body double, Emma, who was seven weeks away from giving birth at the time of filming and it was such a celebration of being beautiful and pregnant. It was glorious.”

Like in the source material, the story is recalled through Fanny’s eyes and she is the narrator.

Fanny has always looked up to her best friend and she develops an obsession with her, aspiring to be the person Linda is.

They may have opposite personalities, but when they are together they bring out the best in each other.

The series also stars Andrew Scott as Lord Merlin, Dominic West as Uncle Matthew, Dolly Wells as Aunt Sadie and Beattie Edmondson as Louisa Radlett.

The Pursuit of Love starts on BBC One on May 9.
