Why are Emmerdale, Coronation Street and EastEnders not on today?

SOAP fans look forward to the dramatic New Year's Day storylines.

But when can we expect to say goodbye to 2021 and hello to 2022.

Why have soaps been cancelled on New Year's Day?

Fans of Emmerdale, EastEnders and Coronation Street will be bitterly disappointed to hear the major soaps will not be showing any episodes today (January 1, 2022).

Despite New Year's Day being one of the most anticipated episodes with typically explosive storylines, the three soaps have decided to scrap the custom.

With New Year's Day, January 1, falling on a Saturday, the New Year's Day episodes will not air.

Although Christmas episodes are aired regardless of the day the celebration falls on, the same rule does not apply to New Year's Day.

When will Emmerdale, Coronation Street and EastEnders be on?

The soaps decided to air hour-long episodes on New Year's Eve instead, with fans being able to see out 2021 with their favourite characters.

Typically Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
