Why Did 'Avengers: Endgame' Change That Epic 'A-Force' Scene?

The A-Force scene in Avengers: Endgame was originally going to be way different than what fans watched unfold in the theaters. Marvel reportedly had big plans for the sequence, which featured all of its female superheroes teaming up to help Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) in the battle against Thanos (Josh Brolin). So why did Marvel decide to switch things up at the last minute?

Inside the epic A-Force scene

There is no doubt that the A-Force scene in Avengers: Endgame thrilled fans, but many viewers were quick to note that it was kind of pointless. Yes, it was great to see all of Marvel’s female superheroes combining their powers, but Captain Marvel really didn’t need any help.

Carol Danvers is one of the most powerful superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and while it was cool to see all of the studio’s amazing women in the same scene, it played a little gimmicky.

The scene, in fact, ends rather abruptly with Captain Marvelblasting through Thanos’ men with little effort.

That said, fans were still happy that Marvel gave them a previewof the characters that might make up the A-Force in a future movie. But thestudio almost went in a completely different direction with the scene, whichmay have played better with audiences.

What were Marvel’s original plans for the A-Force in ‘Avengers: Endgame’?

According to ScreenRant, a senior visual artist for the film, Jackson Sze, recentlyrevealed how Marvel originally wanted things to play out in Avengers: Endgamefor the A-Force scene.

In the original pitch, Captain Marvel was shot down by Thanos’ spaceship, and Pepper Pots noticed what happened and rushed to her aid in her Rescue armor.

“So she raises her shield-protection powers and, as she’sgetting bombarded, calls to all the female Avengers to come help, and they alljump in around Captain Marvel in a circle… and they’re all trying to fightoff the Outriders and protect her,” Sze added.

Sze went on to reveal that Captain Marvel eventually regains hersenses and thanks everyone for keeping her safe. She then powers up and blaststhrough Thanos’ army and takes down the ship, just like in the film.

Sze did not say why the Avengers: Endgame scene wasscrapped or if Marvel filmed the sequence before deciding to ditch it for asimpler version. But if it was filmed, it is possible the studio will releasethe deleted scene in a future edition.

Why did Marvel change the A-Force Scene?

Based on the scale of the original plan, it is evident why Marvel decided to cut the Avengers: Endgame scene. The first pitch really does not fit the narrative of the final version and would not have made sense with everything else that was going on.

It would have also taken away from Captain Marvel’s epic arrival, which showcased why she is one of the most powerful superheroes in the MCU.

That said, the original idea would have given the rest of theA-Force team a more significant role in the movie. It could also have set thestage for the team to join forces in a future film and gave us a preview ofwhat that actually might look like.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ executive regrets Black Widow’s absence

The one character noticeably missing from the A-Force scene was Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow. Natasha Romanoff was killed off earlier in the film as she helped Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) retrieve the Soul Stone.

Considering how Black Widow has been a mainstay in the MCU since IronMan 2, her absence from the A-Force scene was difficult for fans to take.Even worse, a lot of fans were unhappy with her death and felt as thoughHawkeye was more deserving to die.

In a recent interview, Andy Park, who served as an artist for Avengers:Endgame, admitted that it was super sad that Black Widow did not makethe A-Force scene.

“The theme of this whole moment, the idea is something that I can be very proud of — women gathering together and just showing how powerful they are in the MCU,” Park shared.

Park added that they wanted to show the strengths of eachcharacter in the scene, which was not an easy task. And at the end of the day,not having Black Widow in the shot was a huge downer.

Luckily, fans will get to see Johansson return to action one last time when Black Widow premieres in theaters next May. The film is set to kick off Phase 4 of the MCU and will be followed by The Eternals in November of 2020.
