Yellowstone season 4: Fans expose timeline ‘plot hole’ in key Evelyn Dutton scene

Yellowstone: Kevin Costner discusses being on show in 2018

A gripping season finale last year has kept Yellowstone fans hooked, but several continuity issues have been found with the ongoing series. One possible error was spotted in the background of a key episode from the first season of the Paramount Western.

Critical Yellowstone viewers have unearthed a distracting continuity error in the third episode of season one, ‘No Good Horses’.

Each season of Taylor Sheridan’s hit drama are assumed to take place close to the year in which they are released, with season one beginning back in 2018.

Yellowstone has also flashed back to pivotal events in the Dutton family’s dark history, though most of the series takes place in the modern day.

Unfortunately, a mistake with the show’s location has left some fans confused as to what time of year each season is meant to be taking place.

The blunder was spotted near the start of the first season, which began with one of the show’s first flashback’s to reveal the death of John Dutton’s (played by Kevin Costner) wife, Evelyn (Gretchen Mol).

While most viewers were caught up in the emotion of Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Beth (Kelly Reilly) losing their mother, more critical fans couldn’t help but look more closely at the background of the scene.

Their digging seems to have exposed an error in the show’s timeline, as the setting contradicted when the episode claims to be taking place.

One particular viewer took the complaint to online forums when they noticed the flashback’s location didn’t match up to the purported timeline.

They said: “The intro takes place in March. The trees in the background say otherwise.

“In the mountains in March, leaves are usually not fully developed on trees until April at the earliest. The scene was likely shot in the fall.”

As new episodes of Yellowstone are invariably released over the summer months, production for the series usually gets underway after the finale.

Sadly, this means as the show continues to play with the timeline of the series, the appearance of certain trees and flora sometimes don’t correspond to the time of year the scene is meant to be taking place.

Taking a look at the episode in question, it becomes quite clear the luscious green trees behind Mol’s character Evelyn are far too developed for the time of year.

Scenes set around the Dutton ranch are filmed in Montana, where the series is set, though much of the show was also shot in Utah.

This means the sweeping landscape of the Yellowstone and its surrounding hills and valleys are instantly recognisable to certain eagle-eyed viewers.

Yellowstone’s timeline has often caused confusion amongst fans, as this isn’t the first time an inconsistency was spotted in the first couple of seasons.

On Reddit, one viewer advised: “I suspect the writing and timeline will come together more nicely going forward, think of season three as the transition.”

Yellowstone wasn’t originally intended to extend into a third and fourth season, but became a surprise hit following the release of the first instalment.

Fans are hoping the narrative will tighten up now showrunner Taylor Sheridan has a better idea of where he’s taking the series.

Yellowstone season 4 will premiere in 2021 on Paramount.
