The dogs have been confiscated from their owner and put down following the attack, Irish police have said.

A full investigation into the incident is under way.

The boy was attacked by two rottweilers, believed to be owned by his family, while he was at home, reports the Irish Times.

The dogs are one of 11 breeds with ownership restrictions in Ireland. Regulations state they must not be allowed in a public place unless they are on a strong leash or chain no longer than a metre.

It adds that they must also be muzzled and can only be taken outside by someone over the age of 16 who is able to control them.
