Bronx judge orders 3 inmates released due to coronavirus

A Bronx judge on Wednesday released three inmates amid concerns over coronavirus at city jails.

Justice Martin Marcus weighed the fate of 18 prisoners, including nine accused murderers, before opting to set just three loose.

The three released were identified as Rufus Anderson, who was held on a parole violation, Alberto Santos, charged with identity theft and grand larceny, and Giovanni Streed, who was in jail on attempted assault, burglary, and resisting arrest charges.

The Bronx Defenders had filed a request with the court last week that all of the inmates be released due to the spread of the deadly COVID-19 bug behind bars.

At least 273 inmates and 321 corrections officers at city jails have tested positive for the virus, including an inmate who died earlier this week.
