The Duchess of Cornwall will play a leading part in celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next year, in a sign of her rising role within the Royal Family.
Camilla will preside over the ‘Big Lunch’, where thousands of groups of families and friends get together for street parties to mark 70 years of the Her Majesty’s reign.
Elizabeth II, the longest reigning monarch in British history, will pass the milestone on February 6, and the lunch will be part of a long bank holiday weekend of celebrations and events planned for June.

With the Queen, 95, undertaking fewer duties, Prince Charles and his wife are increasingly being called upon to take the lead in areas which would normally fall to the head of state.
A Palace source said: ‘This is part of a range of events taking place but it means Camilla will have a central role in leading the nation in the celebrations in a sign of her growing responsibilities.’
With a raised public profile, Camilla also has a new hairdresser, has started wearing a Fitbit exercise watch to keep in shape and gave an interview to ITV Racing yesterday at Ascot as she takes on the Queen’s role of championing the monarch’s favourite sport.

Camilla, who is patron of the Ebony Horse Club which teaches inner-city children to horse ride in Brixton, invited young riders along for a VIP tour of the course.
She wore a bespoke tweed and velvet coat with matching skirt designed by couturier Roy Allen, wool and faux fur-trimmed hat by Lock & Co, and a silk zip-front blouse from the fashionable high street Me&Em brand, accessorised with a £3,700 Fendi Peekaboo handbag.
She said the young people helped by the charity gave her ‘huge pride’, adding: ‘I hope that there are going to be some budding jockeys in future.’

It comes after a whirlwind tour of Jordan and Egypt, where she said that her favourite spot was the location in Jordan where Christ is said to have been baptised.
Speaking to journalists after the tour, she said: ‘It was extraordinary, something you read about. To actually go down there, you know, and experience it. It was really quite spiritual.’
During the four-day tour, Charles and Camilla took part in more than 30 engagements, with the Duchess carrying out solo engagements in some of the more deprived areas of Amman and Cairo.

A Palace source said last night: ‘The Duchess is increasingly comfortable in the role and confident doing the job. She knows very well what it involves.’
The tour was designed to boost Brand Britain on a global stage in a post-Brexit, post-Covid world. For Charles, his engagements focused on climate change and interfaith relations. Camilla’s involvement, however, looked more like a presidential campaign than a Royal tour.
The charm offensive was persuasive, clearly having an effect on dignitaries and foreign Royals alike. A source close to the Duchess said: ‘This is about showing the world what the Royal Family can do. Camilla is building up years of work in the Middle East, which is vital for Britain and the world.’
How she stays fit for the job
Camilla has taken to wearing a Fitbit exercise watch to keep her in shape as she takes on her increasing workload.
The 74-year-old Duchess was spotted wearing the gadget which keeps track of your movements, as she and Charles visited Egypt and Jordan last week.
Camilla previously revealed how she kept fit during lockdown by trying ballet with a group of other over-50s, dubbed the Silver Swans.
She has also said she does a ‘bit’ of yoga and Pilates.
