One witness told The Courier that people were getting ‘double the amount they asked for’.

The free cash flow came to an end when the manufacturer was contacted and the machine was turned off.

While locals may have considered the fault their lucky day, anyone who keeps extra cash due to a machine malfunction is normally expected to give it back.

Otherwise, they could be guilty of theft.

The 1968 Theft Act says: ‘A person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it.’

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: ‘We received a report of a faulty cash machine on Charleston Drive, Dundee, around 4.20pm on Tuesday, 11 October, 2022.

‘Officers attended and the crowd was dispersed.

‘The manufacturer was contacted and the machine turned off.’
