Ultimate dad turns his house into a giant ball pit using 250,000 balls (and didn’t tell his wife he was doing it)

  • Joel Conder, 34, turned his Surbiton, Surrey, house into a ball pit on March 15
  • He did it to surprise his daughters Kaci, 14, Grace, 12, Sophie, 8, and Chloe, two
  • Joel also shocked his wife Sarah Conder, 33, as he didn’t tell her about his plans
  • He filled his kitchen, lounge and hallway almost three-foot deep with the balls

A father turned his house into a giant ball pit filled with 250,000 balls for his four daughters – all without telling his wife he was doing it.

Joel Conder, 34, often pranks his daughters Kaci, 14, Grace, 12, Sophie, eight, and Chloe, two, for their family YouTube channel.

In a recent videos, Joel recreated one of his daughters’ favourite outings at home, hiring 250,000 balls to transform their home in Surbiton, Surrey, into a giant ball pit on March 15.

But the father-of-four kept his plan a secret from his wife Sarah Conder, 33.

Video footage shows a giant truck arriving with industrial bags filled to the brim with balls.

Joel Conder, 34, transformed his Surbiton, Surrey, home into a giant ball pit as a surprise for his four daughters Kaci, 14, Grace, 12, Sophie, eight, and Chloe, two, and his wife Sarah, 33

The kitchen, lounge and hallway was filled almost three-foot deep with 250,000 balls. A giant truck arrived to deliver the balls while his wife and daughters were out of the house

Joel and his friends fill his kitchen, lounge and hallway almost three-foot deep with the 250,000 balls.

His daughters look thrilled as they walk in to find their house transformed into a ball pit and quickly join in the fun, even diving into the ball pit head-first.

His wife Sarah later arrives and after her initial shock joins Joel and her four daughters in sliding down the stairs on a suitcase and landing in the ball pit.

Joel said: ‘Kaci, Grace, Sophie and Chloe came home first – everything was worth it just for that reaction.

‘They were shrieking with laughter – Kaci was like, ‘mum’s going to kill you.’

‘Then Sarah came home – her face was like ‘oh my god, what have you done?’

‘Then she dived in and started playing with all of us.

‘It’s honestly one of the best memories I think we will have.’

His wife Sarah looks shocked as she first comes into the house and sees the giant ball pit but quickly joins in the fun with her daughters

It started off as just an idea but as his family were isolating at home amid the coronavirus pandemic, he saw the perfect opportunity to make his plan happen.

The family began to isolate at the beginning of March, as Joel has asthma and his daughter Sophie has a low-immune system.

Joel, who runs the YouTube channel Dad V Girls, said: ‘Some of the videos we want to do, I almost sometimes think, ‘what would have been my childhood fantasy?’

‘I thought, imagine coming home to your house being a giant bill pit.

‘My wife and my kids didn’t know – I was working on the idea with my friend and I was like, ‘it can’t just be like a few balls round your ankles, you’ve got to jump in and get lost in it’.’

To ensure they didn’t bring coronavirus into the house, Ballmania brought either brand new balls or ones that had been cleaned and in storage for at least two weeks.

Joel and his friends got just as much fun out of the ball pit as his daughters did, as they all dived into the balls from his kitchen counter after setting up the game

Joel is trying to do more fun things with his family during lockdown and he thinks other parents should cherish this time too (pictured left to right Sarah, Sophie, Grace, Chloe, Kaci and Joel)

Joel said: ‘I have asthma and my daughter Sophie, she has special needs and she has a very low immune system.

‘We as a family started to isolate, we started to cut down on things we were doing – we wouldn’t take the kids to soft play, I stopped taking Chloe to swimming lessons.

‘So I thought, ‘oh my goodness, this is perfect – we can create our own soft play at our house, by turning it into a giant ball pit.’

But after the initial ball pit high wore off, it took them more than two hours to collect all the balls using a giant vacuum.

This is one of various fun things Joel shares on the family’s Youtube, Dad V Girls, now with over 890,000 subscribers.

Joel said: ‘My background is camera and editing and we would always make home movies just to share with families and friends – like on our holidays.

‘I always enjoyed working on those videos more than anything else.

‘We were already capturing memories and making these videos, and my kids were into youtube and they were like ‘wouldn’t it be cool if we had a Youtube channel?’

‘Lots of different things points us in the direction of sharing these videos and making them specifically for Youtube.

‘We just sort of thought, ‘let’s just see what happens.’

‘It’s just evolved into something more than it was ever set out to be.’

During lockdown, Joel is trying to do more fun things with his family and he thinks other parents should cherish this time too.

He said: ‘I know that in many ways, for lots of people, it’s not an ideal situation – people not being able to work and things like this.

‘Let’s just remember that we probably will never get this chance again as families, to all be at home together.

‘Without the kids being at school, without the distractions of friends and social gatherings and all this.

‘Let’s just make the absolute most of it – let’s try and get back to real family life.

‘Just to have my eldest daughter nagging me to play more board games with her – that just shows me how special this time is.’
