The decision to step down as senior royals may come after a turbulent few months for the couple – but it is not so long since Meghan and Harry spoke of their excitement at fulfilling their public roles.

In the first interview following their engagement, Prince Harry said that ‘all we want to do is be able to carry out the right engagements, carry out our work’.

He admitted he had had ‘frank conversations’ with Meghan about the realities of life in the Royal Family before their relationship became public – but added that he thought his future wife would be ‘really unbelievably good at the job part of it’.

He stressed their priority was ‘making sure our relationship is always put first’.

In the candid interview with the BBC’s Mishal Husain in November 2017, Meghan admitted she ‘did not have any understanding of just what it would be like’ to join the Firm.

Harry told how he had warned the former actress about what a serious relationship with him would entail, admitting: ‘I still have to have some pretty frank conversations with her to say what you are letting yourself in for, it’s a big deal. It’s not easy for anybody.’

But he added: ‘I think [Meghan] is capable of anything and together there is a hell of a lot of stuff and work that needs doing.’

Meghan insisted that leaving her US TV show Suits was not ‘giving anything up’ and that she saw joining the Royal Family as a ‘new chapter’.

She said: ‘I think what’s been really exciting is we talk about the transition of this out of my career, but into the role is that the causes that have been very important to me I can focus even more energy on, because very early out of the gate you realise once you have access or a voice that people are willing to listen to – with that comes a lot of responsibility, which I take seriously.

‘Now being boots on the ground in the UK, I’m excited to just really get to know more about the different communities here, the smaller organisations who are working on the same causes I have always been passionate about… and also being able to go around the Commonwealth.’
